PSO2: The Character Creator Demo is Up! Plus Mini Guide!
Hello, the Phantasy Star Online 2 Character Creator is up. You do not need a SEGA ID to download it. You don’t have to be in the Alpha nor Beta Test to download it. You can download it for free and use it to your heart’s content and share it to your friends.
You must download the file from here.
Though the Character Creator is in Japanese, most of the options are visual and can be figured out without any Japanese knowledge. However certain areas need to be explained. This post will expand explaining a few particular features as it becomes available.
This post is currently unfinished!
Screenshot Guidelines:
- Please follow these guidelines because you may trigger a copyright violation if you don’t follow these steps.
- On the bottom of each screenshot you must write: (C)SEGA
- On the page you post your images please place:
「画像は『PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2』キャラクタークリエイト体験版において撮影された実機画像です。」
『PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2』公式サイト
http://pso2.jp/
- You can crop, and resize the screenshots you take and edit them to place the copyright text.
- If you take screenshots within the game it will automatically add the copyright text for you.
Video Guidelines
- At the beginning and end of your video insert the: (C)SEGA for more than 2 seconds.
- Also you must include this text in your video description.
「『PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2』キャラクタークリエイト体験版において撮影された実機動画です。」
『PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2』公式サイト
http://pso2.jp/
- You may not use other music and videos in combination with the Character Creation footage. You may not change the playback speed either.
- But you are allowed to edit the video to insert the copyright information.
- Game Start ゲームスタート
- Settings 環境設定
- File Check ファイルチェック
- Close 終了
In your settings options, you can quickly set the graphical settings for the game. Level Five is the highest and Level One is the lowest. Please note that there are 2 shader options, simple and standard. Your graphics card may not be able to handle standard shaders and can crash the game to desktop. You may need to update your graphics card drivers for it to work. Any setting 3 or higher will use standard shaders by default.

To save your settings, follow these steps
- Look for the left most blue button at the bottom.
- Click 設定を保存 (Save Settings)
- A blue box will open up, click 戻る (Return)
- Look for the last blue button at the bottom.
- Click 戻る (Return) to reach the startup screen.
The third page in settings (画面) changes resolution and windowed mode.
ウィンドウモード Window Mode
- ウィンドウモード表示 Window Mode
- フルスクリーン表示 Full Screen Mode
画面サイズ Screen Size
- Choose a Window Resolution Size
インターフェイス倍率 Interface Zoom
- Standard Zoom
- 1.25x Zoom
- 1.5x Zoom
The fourth button at the top (描画) changes your shader and texture settings
テクスチャ解像度: Texture Resolution [Left Column]
- 高解像度 High Resolution
- 通常 Normal
- 圧縮 Compressed
シェーダー品質: Shader Quality [Right Column]
- 標準 Standard
- 簡易 Simple
Basically there are two settings, one inside the actual game, and one before you run the game. If you have been reading the whole post up until now, you’ve been changing your graphical settings outside of the game.
However, in this demo, it seems they have disabled you from changing in game specific shader settings. So as a workaround you can also edit these shader settings in a text file and in ENGLISH too!
In your Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2 look for a file called “user_benchmark.pso2“, and open this file in notepad.
Function = {
Reflection = true,
LightGeoGraphy = true,
LightShaft = true,
Depth = true,
Bloom = true,
LightEffect = true,
Blur = true,
AntiAliasing = true,
},
You can change these Shader settings to false if you are having trouble running the game with “Standard” shaders on. The game will definitely run faster than before but that’s still really dependent on your computer specs. *Please take note that changing these shader settings won’t have any effect on performance if you’ve already set the shader to simple. “ShaderQuality = true,” is the same as using “Standard” shaders.
You can also change the shadow settings in this file too.
The mouse is hovering over the button where you save your character.
Near the bottom of the character creation screen, you can save and load characters that you’ve made and use them in the Closed Beta.
クリエイトデータ Character Creation Data
- クリエイトデータの保存 Save Character Data
- クリエイトデータの読込 Load Character Data
In your Documents\SEGA\PHANTASYSTARONLINE2 folder your character save data is stored as the name of the file with the extensions:
- Male Human .mhp
- Female Human .fhp
- Male Newman .mnp
- Female Newman .fnp
- Male Casts .mcp
- Female Casts .fcp
You can send this file around to other players.
Throughout character customization you may see some sliders that have drop down menus. The cool thing about PSO2′s character creator is that you can blend different face types together, like if you want a cross between a cynical and pudgy face, you can certainly do it! If you don’t happen to know what a face type actually says, you can test the waters by choosing a face type and moving the yellow point close to the name.
顔バリエーション選択 Facial Variations
Each face template under Facial Variations has different facial blending styles. For simplicity sake we have split them up into Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 is the default facial template, while Type 2 seems to be new facial templates.
When you click on any of these four drop down menus in the game you will see a list. You can select these.
顔ブレンドモーフィング (Face Blend Morphing) for both sexes (Type 1)
- クール系 Cool
- 熱血系 Hotblooded
- 癒し系 Soothing
- ガッチリ系 Rugged
- クール系大人顔 Cool Adult Face
- 熱血系大人顔 Hotblooded Adult Face

- ガッチリ系大人顔 Rugged Adult Face
- クール系子供顔 Cool Child Face
- 熱血系子供顔 Hotblooded Child Face
- 癒し系子供顔 Soothing Child Face
- ガッチリ系子供顔 Rugged Child Face
顔ブレンドモーフィング (Face Blend Morphing) for Males (Type 2)
- シャープ Sharp
- コミカル Comical
- ぽっちゃり Chubby
- シニカル Cynical
- シャープ面長 Sharp Long Face
- コミカル面長 Comical Long Face
- ぽっちゃり面長 Chubby Long Face
- シニカル面長 Cynical Long Faces
- シャープ小顔 Sharp Short Face

- ぽっちゃり小顔 Chubby Short Face
- ミステリアス小顔 Mysterious Short Face
A cynical male face.
シニカル面長 / シニカル小顔
Cynical Long / Cynical Short
Just like facial sliders, body morphing lets you change the thickness and size of your entire body. This slider allows you to choose weight distribution too as we will outline below.
体型ブレンドモーフィング Body Blend Morphing for Females
- ぽっちゃり Chubby
- 細め Thin
- 肩幅狭め Narrow Shoulders
- グラマー Glamour
体型ブレンドモーフィング Body Blend Morphing for Males
- ガッチリ Rugged
- 細め Thin
- 肩幅狭め Narrow Shoulders
- 太め Plump
Emphasis can also be selected with the drop down menu. You will see these suffixes:
- _ _ _ _ で上半身強調 Emphasize Upper Portions
- _ _ _ _ で下半身強調 Emphasize Lower Portions
Here’s an example:
ぽっちゃり で上半身強調 / ぽっちゃりで下半身強調
Chubby Upper Areas / Chubby Lower Areas
- ★ Less than 2000: Please adjust your game settings because the processing load is quite heavy.
- ★★ 2000 through 5000: The game runs fine at the setting, if you have room, you can adjust some settings.
- ★★★ 5001+: The game works wonderfully at this setting.

@Anonymous Maybe it's the screen when you need to accept the general conditions before you can continue ? Try checking an option below it should work.

and as far as installing the game the butto n that says a bunch of japanese and then N> is "next" then you'll get to a page that is cleatly the license terms. Click the the option that says A (as in accept) – the top option then just keep clicking the next button til it installs.
Ricardo man, tell us what all the drop down boxes in the general face and body morphing do. I mean the two that have the tradition sliders we've been using for 10 years now. the N S E W sides each have a dropdown menu with 5 option. the individual part morphing is self explanatory.

Macs aren't for gaming the video cards in just about every model of mac are entry level laptop cards. When I was looking up data on these last year, maybe 25% of the current mac lineup was even capable of running the game based on the system requirements.
Even the towers (Mac Pro) are severely underpowered. While they have powerful Xeon series i7 CPUs, they have GPUs that are on the very low end when it comes to gaming and they want ridiculous amounts of money for minor upgrades. the current lineup has their low end model for 2500 with only a Radeon 5770 – a card that when it first came out about 2 years ago was 200 dollars, Apple wants 250 for now, even though it's antiquated by today's standards.
There is almost never a Mac client for games. if your computer has a video card that's capable of running the game, you'll have to get bootcamp and windows 7 or something similar and run the windows client. Bottom line though is if you want to do any real gaming, you'll want a PC.
I was an apple enthusiast for 28 years before I finally decided the only thing that I liked about them was their OS.
Nilok
April 5th, 2012 at 9:27 am
Just a follow-up: I went ahead and check what it would cost to build an apple computer close to the specs of my current PC (which is now a year old). I won't give a complete breakdown cause I'm sure most people don't care to read it, and there's a lot I can't do with this configuration page on apple's site, but to have the same amount of ram (same speed and quality) a slower cpu than what I have, the same HDDs as I have, a worse video card(they offer an upgrade from a 5770 to a 5870 for $250 extra – meaning they value it at $500…which isn't as powerful as my 560ti which I spent 280 on a year ago) they want $3374.00 @_@ I spent less than $1200 on everything and at the time the stuff I got was bleeding edge.
What I'm saying is for nearly a 3rd of the price a year ago I have a superior machine to the mac pro sold today. the parts I bought then are even less now. and if I wanted to run Mac OS, I can do that on my PC since the OS is now condition to run with x86 and x64 CPUs. just a few tweaks needed to get it to run. but why would I do that? windows is where all the software is

April 5th, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Nilok
April 5th, 2012 at 1:53 pm
@Amigo Charlie: By asking if a PC only game had a mac client(or even a demo) available, you may as well have started a hissy fit. You certainly didn't come across as informed enough to be able to come to the conclusion that when the system reqs list Xp Vista and Windows 7 and no mention of snow leopard or whatever feline Apple's picked for the flavor of the month this time around that Mac OS was not supported. You'd think "Windows PC" would have been the tip off.
So no, there is no mac client there are no plans for a mac client. if you want to play on an apple product, be grateful they're making a watered down version for iOS and don't ask questions you should already know the answers to.

I found this inside the user_benchmark.pso2 file:
Locale = {
Language = "Ja",
Region = "Ja",
},
I have a theory. If PSO2 is Japan only, why would there be a language/region variable in the user config file? Sadly, changing the "Ja" to "En" doesn't work! Just thought I'd mention it!
Nilok

@Mazarushi: I'll post my score when I get my GTX 680 next week. the 7780 I got from my GTX 560ti is not sufficient!!! xD
My 2600k needs a proper sidekick.
Nilok
April 5th, 2012 at 2:05 pm
@Heloise: They found language options in a memory dump of the alpha 2. So this information while interesting and fun to speculate on isn't entirely new and doesn't give us much to go on since it could just be something for future proofing.
Still, I think most of us would like to think that we're getting a global release and that 3 months from now we'll all be playing the full version of this game in English.

Lol let me know man. I can tell you all that the benchmark isn't very cpu or ram intensive like other benches are, so don't bother OCing these or reading guides on how to. Almost, if not all of it is strictly graphics based. If @Unreal's stats are true, I find it VERY intriguing that this game supports SLI. This means the game must run on DX10 (very few games run on this, even FFXIV is DX9.0c and does not support SLI/XFI). I'll verify this with precision.
M3rror
April 5th, 2012 at 3:53 pm
Yeah, the data mining showed us more such as an English Title (or english in the sense the files were labeled as such, the only difference was the JP below was removed). There are quiet a few pointers that there will be an english release, but time will only tell.
Anyways, is there any reason why PSO2 crashes when I switch the shader graphics to Standard or w/e the higher version is? I was able to play the PSO2 a2 test with it, but I had to lower the shader settings. I editted the pso2 file and turned them all off but it still crashes… Do they have a spec lockout or something? I'll try updating in the mean time.

@Mazarushi: yeah this game was never meant to tax the CPU I think it'll run on a gen 1 core duo? Maybe a Core 2, i'll have to look again. I'm not getting the GPU for this game, it's more cause I'm not really pleased with this 560 and I got it when money was tight to complete the rig. I was gonna get a 580 later on, but then after we saw the numbers from AMD, I was curious what nvidia's next gen GPUs were gonna do. Scary how the 680 is really closer to a 560 than a 580 in terms of design, yet you still get such an insane level of performance.
I'll be interested to see what I get seeing as just about everything even a year old is already overkill.
Mazarushi

EDIT: Just re-ran the test and got 31k. Yeah….game doesn't support SLI or XFIRe. Reason why he got 30k is because the test was run in a lower resolution (probably 720p which is what I did). So yeah, my bad
Nilok
April 5th, 2012 at 5:23 pm
Honestly the 560ti is a really nice card for when it came out
great performance/price ratio. I haven't run into a single game that it didn't run at max settings over 50fps and most over 60. PSO2 runs at an average of 100FPS in the bench I think? rarely dipped below 80.
I wonder how it would score at 720p
Kamil
April 5th, 2012 at 5:39 pm
Not quite 6000 on level 5 1080p with a decent prebuilt I got 2 years ago.
A little over 4000 on level 1 1080p with a tower that hasn't had new hardware since Vista.
And I agree with whoever said they got acceptable performance with a score around 700, though my standards are low.

April 5th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
@Ricardo
Ahh that did the trick. Thanks. Didn't improve my benchmark at all, but those things don't know how to accurately tell someone if they can play a game or not, as I was told I wouldn't be able to play Deus Ex: HR on this thing but I proved them wrong! I played the Alpha 2 test perfectly fine (minus the server lag and occasional lag) but this benchmark is saying it's impossible (I score ~770 on lowest settings, yet it keeps a steady 30 fps which is the minimun required to play a game). I smell marketing schemes here… the intro with Nvidia and Intel, lieing to people who use AMD and ATI. It's all a conspiracy.

I just want to say that the facial guide here isn't very helpful at all because you can't see the face… Choose a different hairstyle or a girl character where you can actually see the face and replace the screenshots so we can see whats going on. Justin Bieber hair isn't a face.
Nilok
April 6th, 2012 at 9:19 pm
it helps me just fine. the whole point is for you to understand the words. if you know what they're supposed to do you can figure out the rest on your own. the guide is for people who don't speak japanese to be able to know what all the features are, not hold your hand through every step. he gave you some idea of how it all fits together. I was able to get by just fine once I knew what i was choosing from.
Some people want their hands held for everything.
Ricardo
April 7th, 2012 at 2:13 am
@Kassandra, the point really was to show what options you are selecting. I was hoping people would pay attention to the mouth and jaw line in these screenshots. Quite frankly my character's facial shape will look different from yours because we use different facial variations. But if you insist, I'll add them without Beiber's hair.

Ok cool. And that's corny as hell, you can make a face without having to know what every single field on the drop down list does…most of them you probably won't use anyway. Let your eyes be your guide, it's pretty simple. The guy's not a machine..

I only have 4gb of ram… do you think 8gb would make any difference?
Nilok
April 7th, 2012 at 4:05 pm
No, it's a 32bit program meaning it couldn't take advantage of more ram even if it wanted to.
If you're running a 32bit version of windows you're not even using the 4gb you have now though.
you're running on a lower end performance gpu. the 6770 is the successor to the 5770. My friend's card is a 5870 which is significantly better than either and his scores are only as good as they are because he's not running in 1080p.
The 6770 is really not designed for performance and is generally seen as a minor step above a HTPC card.
What are your computer's full specs?

Ricardo! I'm still not used to seeing you "talk", old chum!
Have you perchance figured out how to make your created character appear in the benchmark video? It seems like after creating a character, they'll appear in the benchmark, but creating another character places the new one as the default, and restarting the app seems to reset it entirely to the default guy.

April 7th, 2012 at 10:48 pm
you have to reload them from character creation from what i can tell which means saving them again X_x.
To reload them start a character that's the same gender and race as the character you want to load and scroll down to the very bottom. the second frm the last item is to load created characters, but it will only list character data from characters that are of the same race and gender as the character you're on.

I did the test on several computers and seems to me the engine relies MUCH on the CPU.
I couldn't achieve 99.999 like I did on my machine on other PCs I tried, even on ultra low settings, and they had really big GPUs, difference were on CPU.
That's not very cool for the gamers who can't afford a high-end Motherboard/CPU, I hope they optimize it

The games more graphics based than anything else my friend. The 580 is the reason you're destroying your other machines. @Aspen, clock your processor down to 4.0 or even stock settings and you'll see what I mean. Also, PSO2 does not recognize SLI or XFIRE because it runs on DirectX9.0c, so unless you have a dual gpu card it only sees one.

I was getting 50-60 FPS… I don't see how that would be poor performance. It looked really good!
Nilok
April 8th, 2012 at 8:12 am
if it was staying around 50 or 60 fps then yeah, you're good. if it was peaking around 6 but was staying in the 30s and dipping into the 20s, it's playable but you can do much better. if it's under 30 on average, it's technically considered unplayable.

@Nilok Unfortunately, that's all I've been able to figure out too! Seems like a bit of an oversight, but then again, I'm picky and anal and the majority of people probably don't repeatedly run their guys through the Benchmark test, hehe.

I was watching some more recorded footage of Alpha 2 gameplay… and I want some confirmation on this. Is there now like an AFK mode, that pops up as lil dots above your character? Or is that just letting everyone know that you're navigating your menu? an AFK feature would be nice as well.

You can get the character creator program here as well as the benchmark.
The CC program is found after clicking the large blue button near the bottom and then the one on the right.

ive translated 99% of the launcher and in game.
ok well its not really so much a "translation" as much as a description of all the buttons and such you can click.
written in a tabbed styling to help keep it organized and easy to follow.
includes differentiation of certain options between males and females and between organics and casts, also includes bits of sarcasm! yay!
credit to this page for using most of their translations, and the rest to myself for spending like 2 hours doing this lol.
be sure to let me know if somethings amiss!

I'm playing the game fine today, but for some reason the fullscreen option no longer works on the launch version for me. I was able to get the game into fullscreen for the initial character creator/benchmark version but for the full release no matter what I do, the game will not go fullscreen. Even in windowed mode the resolution doesn't change. It's like my game is stuck windowed at a specific resolution no matter whether I have fullscreen or windowed selected and what resolution I have set for windowed mode. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey I have a question. For the character creation app that you have to download separately. Is it still required to download it? because I'm looking at the dates and this thread seems a little old and I just downloaded pso yesterday July 18. Seems like the game is in full release and has a character creator already. I made a character and entered the world but I was wondering if USA users have to use the separate creator app or everyone else can't see you. Thanks for whoever answers!

Is that the Character Creation installer? I could be wrong but it looks like windows is looking for the location of a missing or moved file either on a disc (not possible, no disc for the Character Creator) or on your hard drive. Are you running that installer through a shortcut? If so, have you possibly moved the actual installation file to a new folder or location recently? Tried deleting the installer and downloading a new one?
jonnyseoul
July 23rd, 2012 at 8:06 am
thanks for the suggestion, Ganymede.
I redownloaded BUT I realized that I didn't properly extract all the files so everything came out in a jumbled mess and the installer couldn't find all the files it needed.
SOOO I redownloaded and re- extracted… and so far everything works. THANKS

July 28th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
I'm a little confused, do you only have to pay for a second character if you still have your first one, or do you still have to pay if you delete your first character?
Ganymede
July 28th, 2012 at 4:57 pm
Your welcome, Jonny.
Alceris, If you delete your original character, you DO NOT have to pay to create a new one. However, if you are wanting to keep your first character AND create a secondary character then you will have to purchase a second slot for that character via Arks Cash. (See Guides for Arks Cash information).
