Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity Demo Guide and Impressions

Posted by Ricardo

PSP2i Colonel Sanders 300x170

Today is January 11th, 2011, and the Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity Japanese Demo is now “Officially” available to the public. You can download the demo at PSP2i Demo Trial Page. You should place this Folder within the GAME folder for your Playstation Portable.

x:\PSP\GAME\NPJH90157

This is where you place the demo within the PSP directory.

Infinity Trial License Expiration

On Monday February 21st, 2011, the trial license for the Japanese version of Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity expires. To continue playing online, players must register their Infinity License which comes packaged within the UMD version of the game, and is automatically included with the downloadable version of the game.

Importing Your Previous Save

import psp2 300x135

You can Import your previous Japanese Phantasy Star Portable 2 Save files by pressing the Import menu on the title screen. Select the second menu option 前作セーブデータ which will import your previous save. Once you do this you will have 5 Fusion Codes フュージョンコードx5. These will show up in the last tab of your items menu. Fusion Codes are needed for the Weapon Synthesis system.

If you import your previous save and your character is over level 100, and battle type level 20, they will not gain any exp or type points within that state. Only Battle Types below Level 20 are able to gain type points.

New Game as The Dewmans

new dewman 300x170

You can of course create a new character of any of the existing races. Also you can start out as the new race, The Dewmans. Dewmans are very proficient with Melee and Force weapons and have high accuracy, but they have extremely low HP, defense, evasion, and stamina. This race is meant for expert players who can evade or block attacks.

dewman female 2 300x170

Whatever race you choose for a new character, you can gain up to level 100 and type level 20 within Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity’s Demo.

Mode Selection

Mode select PSP 300x170

[Story Mode] features Episode 1 and Episode 2. You can play up to two chapters in Episode 1. Alternatively you can play the Prologue portion for Episode 2.

[Multi Mode] features ad-hoc gameplay with those who also have the demo.

[Internet Multi-Mode] features online gameplay with others across Japan. You will need an Infinity Trial License which is available only at the Japanese Playstation Network and requires a Japanese Playstation Network Account. You can download the Infinity Trial License on January 20th, 2011. It is in a first come first serve basis.

[Friend Search Mode] allows one to download and transfer their own character data to other PSPs nearby. You can also receive other character data and import them into your game. With this function you can bring your friend’s characters into your party offline!

Friend Search Mode can also be activated during Story Mode, press the Triangle Button to Activate and Disable it.

Infinity Missions

psp2i code counter 300x170

Infinity Missions are VR missions. These missions include random enemy appearances based on data that is embedded within the mission itself. Missions are collected in items called Mission Disks, these disks must be taken to the Code Counter on your ship.

Mission disk infinity 300x170

Ami found a Mission Disk!

You would then register these Mission Disks which will convert into Mission Codes. You can then play these Mission Codes at the Mission Counter and find even more Mission Disks along the way.

Infinity Missions can be combined with other Infinity Missions to create new ones. This can only be done if you have enough composition points to produce it. Here are some points to know..

  • Each Mission has it’s own composition point requirements.
  • Points you gain by completing Infinity Missions only apply to that mission.
  • In other words you can’t transfer points you gain in one mission to another mission.

To gain Synthesis Points, you have to clear the mission. You can check the total amount of points you have by checking the information described below.

Infinity Mission Synthesis Points

code page 3

ミッション合成P Mission Synthesis Points show you the total amount you have and the required you need for synthesis.

合計 The total amount of synthesis points you have so far. In the screenshot above, you have zero points.

必要 The amount needed to use this mission code for synthesis.

In order to gain synthesis points you must complete the mission over and over. You gain more synthesis points based on what difficulty rank you complete. In the example above, this mission code is not available for synthesis because the total amount is zero and the required amount is 10. After completing this mission once, the player will have enough points needed to use this mission for synthesis.

The higher the LV attached to the mission code, the higher amount of points needed to use the mission for synthesis.

Combining Mission Codes

psp2i mission code 300x170

Mission Code Synthesis.

The base mission you select will use the field the mission currently has. The plus mission you select will use the boss that is currently on that mission code. When you start synthesis, you will combine the two mission codes to create a new mission. The new mission will use certain aspects and effects from both missions.

psp2i code list 300x170

Infinity Demo Mission Code Combination List.

The top three Base(Fields) and the top three Plus (Bosses) in the screenshot above is available in the demo. When you acquire or combine mission codes, their names will combine creating new or duplicate names. So you can have several Snow Shelled Beasts and Summer Shelled Beasts.

Friend Search

friend search data 300x170

Friend Search is available within the Demo. This allows you to download your friends’ or strangers’ characters throughout the day. You can activate this feature in Sleep mode (at the Friend Search Mode in the Title Screen) or Story Mode. This mode requires two or more PSPs to come in contact with each other.

A new menu option will appear in the Start Menu > Community section. This is called Support Character. Within this menu you can add “マイキャラクター or My Characters” which are characters that you created in your save file. You can also invite “フレンドキャラクター or Friend Characters” which are characters you downloaded and registered through Friend Search.

Invite Characters to your Party

Party Menu 300x170

Invite “My Characters” and “Friend Characters“  just like how you would invite a regular NPC in the english version of PSP2.

Highlight the パーティー Party Menu

  • Inviting My Character
    • Highlight the Party Icon
    • Select Invite to Party パーティー招待
    • Select My Character マイキャラクター招待
    • Select characters to join!
  • Inviting Friend Character
    • Highlight the Party Icon
    • Select Invite to Party パーティー招待
    • Select Friend Character フレンドキャラクター招待
    • Select downloaded character to join!

Applying Charge Shot II

psp2i weapon shop 300x170

Charge Shot II is a new attack animation for all ranged weapons. Charge Shot II is reminiscent towards how Photon Arts worked on guns in Phantasy Star Zero. The demo allows you to change your guns over to this new Charge Shot by paying a fee. You can select “Change Charge Type” to start the process.

psp2i charge shot 2 300x170

The menu should open up with all guns in your inventory. You would then pay a fee based on the grind price to change the weapon over to Charge Shot II. You can alternatively change a weapon back to Charge Shot I. Check the gun’s second page to see what charge type it currently has.

How to Get Colonel Sanders Partner Card

KFC gurhal 300x170

Colonel Sanders can be obtained in the demo. In order to receive his partner card, you must find KFC Gurhal! It is located in a Multimode only mission on Clad 6 called 蒼海の巨殻獣 Crustacean of the Sea (Pending Title). Look for the crab boss within the mission pictures.

KFC psp2i 300x170

On sector 3 of this mission you may randomly find a rainbow portal to KFC Gurhal off to the side before using the catapult jump to the boss portal. If it doesn’t appear you’ll have to restart the mission. When you arrive you can talk to the two NPCs to get your stamp per visit. When you obtain enough stamps you can purchase various colors of Colonel Sanders Suit!

Colonel Sanders Phantasy star 300x170

As long as you talk to Colonel Sanders you can obtain his partner card. He also sells various items you can use within the demo.

  • KFC Gurhal Menu
    • カーネル・ステッキ打 Colonel Stick (Dagger) 5000 Meseta
    • カーネル・ステッキ法 Colonel Stick (Wand) 5000 Meseta
    • ケチャップガン Ketchup Gun 3000 Meseta
    • マスタードガン Mustard Gun 10000 Meseta
    • チキンライン Chicken-weave 1500 Meseta
    • パーティーバーレル Party Barrel (Room Item) 3880 Meseta

After the mission, head to your room to pick up the title  ケンタッキーを発見した to receive your Free Colonel Sanders Suit カーネルサンダーススーツ  which is only for males and is based on whether your character is a cast or flesh.

Take Screenshots

pspo2i demo hyuga 300x170

You can take screenshots by holding down the select button, until the camera icon pops up. Then press the Start button to take the screenshot. The screens can be transported to your computer, on your PSP directory, check for a Picture folder.

Demo ≠ Retail

Fanta Outfits 300x170

Sakai isn’t done yet, and the retail version of the game is still in production. However he wants your input and impressions about the demo because things are subject to change in the retail version!

Well this ends our little mini guide for now, but come back later for more pictures and features. The translations page in the sidebar will be updated with some menu translations!

The document.dat file is larger

infinity missions look awfully complicate to make…

infiniTi

January 10th, 2011 at 5:19 pm

hey is leaked version and public version different???

Ricardo

January 10th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

The infinity missions aren’t so complicated but the language barrier caused some confusion among players.

The public version has a manual now.

It should be noted that only Japanese game data can be imported. Obvious from a technical standpoint, but not from a gamer’s necessarily. Also, the circle and X buttons are reversed in Japanese games, which might throw some off.

This demo is great fun, in spite of my mediocre kanji and vocabulary. I’m a bit nervous about the lack of news about a Western release though.

Also, I am far more excited about the new female hairstyle that includes headgoggles than I should be. I have wanted headgoggles since PSU. :P

I like the dumans.. but.. There are no facial options for a young looking face… All of the available Male duman faces make you look old and have a boney face.. They should have changed that.

when u say come in contact do u mean bein the same room contact or what

Ricardo

January 10th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Like two PSPs nearby each other. I think it also works through Ad-hoc party but I haven’t tested.

The point is that you would bring your PSP in Tokyo and throughout the day you’d download other people’s characters while the game is in Sleep mode.

Crystal Shard

January 10th, 2011 at 8:58 pm

Mike, I know the download’s already on the website, but any idea what time the JP PSN will be getting the demo listed? The site only seems to say the date, but not the time.

Ricardo

January 10th, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Oh i’m not sure about the time though.

Crystal Shard

January 10th, 2011 at 9:16 pm

Hmm, I heard some people saying about noon in Japan’s timezone. Guess I’ll try around then again.

Just started trying out the game and im wondering, when you receive damage, is this auto heal a new thing? or is it dumans new feature? cant tell since i cant read jap so just thought anyone here or the blogger knows it. btw only just started playing it about 10mins ago.

Ricardo

January 10th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

自動回復薬ハーフライン This auto recovery med halfline or deadline is a new ability at the type counter that will use one of your mates when your HP is below 50% or 35%.

January 10th, 2011 at 11:57 pm

hey where i can get KFC’s partnercard???

Ricardo

January 11th, 2011 at 12:08 am

You need to do the multimode mission on clad 6 called 蒼海の巨殻獣, it will randomly appear on block 3. Just talk to sanders and he will give you the card.

Josafine

January 11th, 2011 at 5:55 am

So, I completed the Episode two with Nagisa, and didn’t get a partner card from anyone. Is it safe to assume that in this demo, you will be fighting alone? Or do Nagisa, Hyuuga and Emilia give their partner cards elsewhere?
Kind of weird they would have KFC dude and not them lol.

SnowFox102

January 11th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

@Josafine I imagine they expect you to either import data from PSP2 and use those cards, or play Ep1 and get the cards there before playing Ep2. I doubt Nagisa will cough up her card before you actually do a mission with her, so you can’t get it in the demo since you don’t get that far. Same for Hyuga.

If you need partners, you can always use your MySynth, as well as the characters you’ve created on the same file.

RJ

January 11th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

wow this soundz intense!!!

Josafine

January 11th, 2011 at 6:02 pm

@SnowFox102
Ah okay thanks for the information.

Unfortunate, since I played my PSP2 in English, so I cannot carry over the save file. But at least I can get Emilia’s card :D
lol

In any case, I cannot wait for this game to be released.

ChaosNagisa

January 11th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

How is your character Ami on LVL 154 if the demo only allows you to level to 100?

SnowFox102

January 11th, 2011 at 8:30 pm

@Josafine If you have a PSP with custom firmware that can run it, it’s possible to transfer save data across region versions with a plugin. I’ve not done it myself (my PSP has the wrong firmware), but it’s possible.

Babbles45

January 11th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

Would you be able to create a duman and outfit it with the human from this game design? (I don’t like what the duman wear)
Also do you have to create a folder or does it automatically come? (I didn’t get what the site was saying with download instructions)

Ricardo

January 11th, 2011 at 9:16 pm

@Babbles45
You can wear whatever outfit you want as you can see in the screenshots above I changed the Duman’s main outfit.

It’s best to extract the zip file somewhere on your computer, then move the NPJH90157 folder to your PSP’s GAME folder

Babbles45

January 11th, 2011 at 10:17 pm

do you need a custom firmware for this? Cause the download not working for me.

It also says plea
as insert the last disk of multi-volume set and click okay to continue

Ricardo

January 11th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I’m using Official Firmware 6.35 and it is working for me.

Babbles45

January 11th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

It also says plea
as insert the last disk of multi-volume set and click okay to continue

Then how do I get it?

Ricardo

January 11th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Did you save the zip file on your computer first or did you put it on the PSP. You have to unzip the file before placing it on the PSP>

Nuno

January 12th, 2011 at 9:57 am

will infinity allow to play online with people that are playing the first PSP2?

Ricardo

January 12th, 2011 at 10:33 am

I don’t believe so.

Nuno

January 12th, 2011 at 10:40 am

too bad, thanks anyway :)

Babbles45

January 12th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

I have Google chrome so when i download it downloads on the web browser and then i can go to my computer download folder, it also sometime says no files to extract or file invalid or corrupted. so is there another place to download it?

SnowFox102

January 12th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

@Babbles45 If it’s not working from SEGA’s own download site, it’s a problem with your computer and not the download. Try using a different browser (it worked fine for me on Firefox) and also try different unzipping software (such as 7Zip instead of Window’s native unzipper) The files are zipped with their paths intact, so all you have to do is open the zip and copy the folder you find there (“PSP”) to the root of your memory stick.

Thank you so much for this amazing pointers guide. I daresay it’s one of the best PSP2 help sections in general. I remember when everyone wrote FAQs for these types of games, but I’ve seen that pickings for the original PSP2 are scarce here.D:

Mornsta

January 14th, 2011 at 1:48 am

2 new voices bringing total voices to 19, somemore hairstyles…that’s all that’s new IMO.

Do not like the fact that there’s +3sec loading time in this sequel…

SnowFox102

January 14th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

@Mornsta You must not have played very much. There are new customization options for characters as you mentioned, but there are also new PAs, new areas, new enemies, new partner characters, new weapons and armor, new room decorations, a new race with a fun blast, and a new story.

If you’re experiencing a different load time, you must have some kind of hardware issue.

Mornsta

January 15th, 2011 at 1:31 am

@SnowFox102
Yes, I am aware of the other changes.

For me, there’s nothing much to do.
Change a few aesthetic looks, input visophone passwords, and complete the new act 2 chapter 1.
There’s no point wasting the time adding the new abilities/achievements/ etc “powerups” because the demo featured monsters have low AI and are easy to kill.
I really hope the full game will “Wow!” me because the demo doesn’t seem much.

As for loadtimes, I infer from your statement that you’re using OFW and have never experienced how fast games load, when played with CFW uncompressed from the memory stick. (note: most PSN store downloads are abit compressed and can’t match up to the speed).

i.e
For you, PSP2:Infinity demo eboot seems fast because you’re been playing the slow PSP2 UMD/PSN.
For me, PSP2:Infinity demo eboot seems slow because I’ve been playing the PSP2 ISO uncompressed.

On a side note, I hope the US version when it comes out will also have new voices available during character creation. I’m surprised anyone wants to play as a male on the PSP2 US, almost every male voice is UGGGAHHHHH….

infiniTi

January 15th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

how do you have sooooooo many mission codes?????? can you give them to me like friend seach mode or your savedata???

SnowFox102

January 15th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Actually I have played PSP2 on an ISO, though I prefer not to and haven’t run one for very long because I don’t have a memory stick big enough to house the whole thing so I had to dummy out the movies. That said, I wouldn’t complain about load times since the makers don’t expect you to be running CFW, so it’s not really their fault the load times are different. And if you like playing from an ISO, it’s not that hard to dump one once you have the UMD. Or so I’ve been told.

I agree on the voices, females aren’t much better off. In PSU my Beast character had the perfect voice; she had two different evil laughs, one of which she did when nanoblasting. In PSP2 the only voice that I don’t hate makes a strange gargling noise when nanoblasting, and none of them laugh. They all talk too much too, especially if you’re a Force. “Let’s see how you handle this! Let’s see – Let’s see – Let’s see…” ARG SHUT UP!

ChaosNagisa

January 16th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

@infiniti To get more mission codes, you have to do infinity missions. To select infinity mission’s, Go to the mission counter, Select the Third choice, and pick one.

Also, if you ever go to the infinity counter, NEVER delete your mission codes (the items with NEW on them) if you do, you’ll have to start over on a new save file to get them back.

@Anonymous: You’re thinking too hard. Kontinyu means continue. ;) Words written in katakana are usually foreign words, often English. Though sometimes it just indicates someone talks funny (like Chelsea). Also Hyuga uses katakana to say boku (me/I) for some odd reason.
