Even More PSO2:NGS Gameplay Footage

Planet Halpha: Central City

New gameplay footage was shown during the Phantasy Star Online 20th Anniversary stream! Comedy duo, Nasu Nakanishi, explored Central City during an Emergency Quest notification. Within Central City, you can explore a variety of facilities and conference areas. Utilizing double jump, you can reach on top of the buildings, and see the city from new heights. You can even run atop the castle walls surrounding the city.

The Adventure Area

From the city, you can simply run out into the adventure area with no loading screens at all.  Here you can fight enemies, such as the "Alters," who resemble the natives from PSO2. In fact, one such native, the monkey-like " Oodan" makes an appearance under its new title, "Oodan Roa." There's also enemies reminiscent of the dragonkin known as "Lizard Feurei" and "Lizard Ice," who appear to release elemental attacks.

If a fellow player becomes incapacitated, you have the ability to revive them with a Moon Atomizer.

Eventually, Nasu Nakanishi made their way to the "Dolls" where they fought a Shifta buffed "Gororon."  These rotund enemies can release long-distant shockwaves from their bellies as well as perform spindash attacks.

We also got a brief glimpse of an Emergency Quest area which can randomly spawn on the map.

The Tutorial Cocoon

Scattered across the field are "Cocoons," that hold instance quests. One such quest, known as "First Steps," gives players a tutorial on some of the features they may use on the field. You can perform the Photon Dash by holding [RT] while moving. If you wish to perform a Photon Glide, simply hold or press A during a double jump.

The Phantasy Star series iconic, "Photon Blast," will also make a comeback. Just as in past games, you must fill the blast gauge during battle until it begins to glow. From here you can activate the attack by either selecting it within the sub-palette or by pressing its shortcut key.

Shigeki Nakanishi also demoed some more of the character creation aspects of PSO2: New Genesis.

What's New In PSO2: New Genesis Character Creator

New Genesis expands upon PSO2's character creation by giving players even more customization than before. Today we'll take a look at the new features implemented in NGS.

Face Types

You can select either the NGS or older PSO2 face models for your character.

Eye Adjustments

New Genesis allows even further eye customization by implementing sliders that change the outer corner of the eyes and the height of the eyelids. With this you can create Phaleg's signature closed eyes appearance without having to rely on getting it through AC Scratch.

The left and right eyelid sliders can be changed separately so that you can acquire a permanent winking expression. In addition, you have the option of adjusting the pupils up and down, recreating that popular… uh… expression.

Eyebrows and Eyelashes

You can now change your eyebrows to any color and adjust the distance between them.

Eyelashes have finally gained color customization. Hopefully this means Sega no longer has to spam the AC Scratch with different color variations.

Hairstyles

New Genesis will introduce new hairstyles, and some of them will allow you to change the length of the bangs.

Mouth

A new slider was introduced that lets you change the distance between the nose and the mouth. Inside the mouth, you can select the teeth and tongue style, and position the tongue to have it sticking out. The corners of the lips have their own sliders which can be adjusted individually or simultaneously.

Eyes

With NGS, you can change the size of your pupils and adjust their sight line.

Ears and Horns

You are now able to choose the style of your ears and horns regardless of race and gender. Ear selection ranges from Humans, Newmans, and Cast . You can even select the single or double horns Dewmans are known for.

With such freedom, you could create a Caseal with Newman ears and Dewman horns.

Neck Angle

Adjusting the angle of the neck will allow your character to look downwards or upwards.

Makeup Pattern

A new slider will let you adjust the strength of the makeup pattern.

Body Adjustments

The shoulder volume slider can morph between big beefy shoulders to slim skinny arms. Shoulder height can also be adjusted to give your character a shrugging appearance. Forearm volume adjustments can be made if you want those bulging Popeye muscles. Additionally, you can edit the thickness and overall shape of your hands.

New sliders were added to adjust the size of the thighs, calves, and feet.

Even men can edit the size of their breasts.

Body Types

PSO2: New Genesis will do away with the gender concept of having a "male" or "female" character. Instead, your character can select a body type that could have a masculine or feminine physique. There's Human Type 1, Human Type 2, Cast Type 1, and Cast Type 2.

For example, here is a Cast Type 2 body type using a human face.

Outfits

PSO2: NGS has [Basewear / Setwear], [Outerwear], and [Innerwear]. Each outfit option has color adjustment settings.

Accessories

The accessory limit is now cost based, where you can put up to 18 "points" of accessories. Accessories typically cost between 2~4 points.

Animation Selection

You can select the animation or poses used for standing, walking, running, jumping, photon dashing, photon gliding, and swimming,

  • The ARKS consist of the Halphanian people, but there are other individuals arriving to the planet. These mysterious people are known as Meteorn, and they arrive from outer space through pods.
  • The Meteorn have no memory of their life before they arrived, and no one knows where they come from.
  • Many of the Meteorn have decided to join sides with the ARKS to fight against the DOLLS.

Fighter

  • We introduced the first three classes in the previous recap, but this time they revealed Fighter, Gunner, and Techer!
  • Fighters are good at close range combat. They use Knuckles which can hit the enemy in quick succession. They can also sway to dodge attacks.

Gunner

  • Gunners return with the stylish roll and chaining system with Twin Machine Guns.

Techer

  • Techers can perform their usual wand elemental explosions. In addition, Techers can even block attacks!

The Six Classes

  • Each class will be able to equip two to three types of weapons.
  • However, during the closed beta, they will only be able to equip one weapon type.
  • Announcements for new weapon types will be revealed at later dates.

Sub-Classes

  • You can once again select a sub-class, allowing you to use weapons from another class.

Multi-Weapon System

  • With the Multi-Weapon System, you can put the actions and photon arts of another weapon type into your main weapon. For example, you can switch freely between sword and assault rifle, or even wand and knuckles without changing the weapon palette.

  • This lets you automatically jump up from obstacles or walls.

Swimming

  • Woah! What's This! You can now swim in New Genesis!

MAGS in New Genesis

  • Mags are quite different from their PSO2 counterparts because they no longer support you in battle. In New Genesis, they act more like a helpful partner who becomes a portable terminal in the story. In addition, they react to new facilities in the open fields as you approach them.

Teleporting

  • The Ryuker Device allows you to teleport to far away locations.
  • You can also teleport to a visited Ryuker Device from the main menu while you're out on the field.

Cocoons

  • Scattered across the field are Cocoons. These allow you to participate in Instanced Quests, which you can perform solo or with a party.
  • These quests appear to have various objectives designated under "Main Missions" and "Side Missions." For example, while the Main Mission wants you to reach the end, the side missions will task you with challenges such as clearing it within 5 or 10 minutes, or receiving less than 10 hits, etc.
  • The Training Cocoon showed during the demonstration appears to present a reward of 1 Skill Point.

Emergency Trials

  • Emergency Trials can occur randomly just like in PSO2.
  • Two new trials revealed today showcase the ARKS intercepting the DOLLS Control Aircraft, and the clearing out of a Assembly Point.

Region Mags

  • This gigantic mag will give a boost to all players on a Ship. Everyone can participate by feeding it various materials to increase the boost rate. There appears to be a "Social Boost" and a "Personal Boost." For example, the Social Boost increased the EXP rate by +10%, and the Personal Boost increased the Rare Drop Rate by +10%.

Emergency Quests

  • These quests can occur randomly at certain areas in the field.

Central City

  • This city serves as the base of operations for the ARKS. As a lobby, it can hold up to 100 players in the same instance. Here you can chat and use the facilities around the city.

Feature: Tasks

  • NPCs will provide you with various tasks to complete. These will net you rewards like EXP and Items, etc.

Feature: Food Stand

  • Materials can be gathered from trees and wild animals.

Feature: Item Enhancement

  • The Item Lab so far has the following features:
    • Item Grinding
    • Limit Breaking
    • Ability Affixing
    • Potential Unlocking
    • Multi-Weapon
  • You can grind your items to make them stronger. The demonstration appears to be using the NT grinding system.
  • Special Ability Affixing lets you add effects onto your weapon. In the demonstration, they affixed a sword by supplying it with 10x ï½¢C/Power Iï½£ and 10x ï½¢C/Forms Soul Iï½£ capsules. This led to success rates of 100% for ï½¢Power Iï½£ and 90% for ï½¢Forms Soul Iï½£.
  • It appears each capsule adds a success rate for their specific abilities:
    • One ï½¢C/Power Iï½£ = +10% Power 1 success

  • At the character login screen you can select whether you want to log into PSO2 or NGS.
  • In addition, the block changer in PSO2 allows you to switch to NGS.
