Tales of Xillia: Over Limits and New King Character

Ok we’re back with Tales of Xillia news, with some previous news we missed due to all that Phantasy Star Online 2 information popping out. Famitsu has just released clearer screenshots on their site.

Over Limit

While you are in Link Mode, (this is where two characters are linked together) as you attack enemies your gauge gets filled up. When the Link Artes icon appear you push the R2 button to perform the arte together. However if you let the gauge fill to MAX, you switch to Overlimit mode. This allows you to fire  Link Artes and Other Artes in quick succession, in addition you can perform a link artes chain.

A screenshot of the link artes chain.

Gaius

Gaias is 32 years old voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu. His character appears on the top right corner of the main box art. He is the king of A Joule, the northern portion of Liese Maxia. With his god-like fighting ability and charisma, he was able to unify different tribes. This let him establish the federation nation of A Joule.

Tales of Xillia: Nachtigal, Ivar, and Shop Build System

Some new Tales of Xillia screenshots came out today featuring Nachtigal I Fan and Ivar.

Nachtigal I Fan (52 years old) is La Sugal’s king, running an autocratic style of leadership with the intent on unifying all of Liese Maxia. Originally he was one out of three princes up to take the throne. Though it was unlikely for him to take that position, he somehow put down an internal insurrection between them and  took the spot. During his youth, he was part of the army, and he has won many battles.

Gradually his self-righteous inclination increased, and in his later years, he pressured the cities of his kingdom with military power. He put a firm step in letting others obey his policies.

Ivar is 16 years old. His family served under “Shrine Maiden Maxwell” for generations within a village dedicated to her. He takes pride in servicing the Shrine Maiden, he’s been her steward ever since his childhood. However, he arbitrarily concluded that Jude robbed him of his position as Milla’s caretaker, and whenever possible will rush to her assistance. Though his sense of justice is higher than average, he tends to become short tempered and elitist.

Tales of Xillia has “search points” where along your adventure you can find items by opening bags or discover them in various places.

When a player approaches a search point, the camera will draw attention to the place you should search. When they collect the item, the search point will disappear, but after some time, the search point will reappear. However, the respawn area is randomized somewhere around the original location.

Tales of Xillia has five kinds of shops, a thrift store, weapon shop, armor shop, decorations shop, and restaurants. Using the “Shop Build System” you can further the development of these stores. By selecting the “development” option, you will deliver raw materials or gald to further enhance the items sold within the shop.

Each item category listed requires a certain amount of growth points. As you deliver materials or gald, the shop’s level will increase and the store will sell new items and existing items at a cheaper price. In addition, each item category also has a bonus, as depicted in the screenshot above. If you deliver that specific material listed in the icon, it will have double the amount of points towards improving the shop.

At level 1, only one weapon was sold, but now at Level 43, many items are sold!

The shop build system affects shops in all towns, so there’s no need for you to worry on building each and every shop from scratch in the game.

Tales of Xillia: Famitsu Details Minor Characters

Some new information leaked out of the latest Famitsu. If anything is a little off let me know.

  • Craine, (Kurein K Schall) va: Sōichirō Hoshi
    • He’s a 24 year old feudal lord. He has long hair on his left side that goes down to his cheek. Lately he has been dissatisfied with the politics of La Sugal’s King. He defends liberalism, those who rebel against the government. He has a sweet, younger sister named Droselle.
  • Droselle K Schall va: Kozue Kamada
    • She’s 18 years old. Similarly to her older brother, one side of her hair comes down to her cheek, but instead on the right side. She loves and respect her older brother, and feels sympathy for the weak. Due to this, she’s like a sister to Elise, both sharing a mutual friendship.
  • Link Artes
    • Link Artes are forms of attack where two characters are in pincer position as they fight enemies and protect one another.  There’s a gauge on the left hand side of the screen that fills up when you attack an enemy. You can choose to fill up the gauge 5 levels, though it will  flash when a link arte is available. During this time, the Link Artes icon is shown on the screen and you press R2 to utilize it.
    • Demon Fist (Jude) + Wind Lance (Milla) = Severing Wind Edge
    • Demon Fist (Jude) + Splash (Rowen) = Splash Line:  The enemy is launched by a water jug, and a stream of water is shot sort of like Demon Fist combined with a Laser.
    • Wind Lance (Milla) + Pico Hammer (Elise) = Pico Rain: Many pico hammers rain down on the opponent. (The original poster observed that the screenshot shows Wind Cutter and not Wind lance)

Tales of Xillia: Dengeki Interviews Producer Baba

Producer Baba for Tales of Xillia was recently interviewed by Dengeki. Here are some notes from the interview. With TOX, he wants to fuse the traditional elements you’ve come to expect from the Tales series with new elements.

  • What is the theme for each of the characters?
    • Baba thinks of Jude as the person who, “taking a step of courage”
    • Alvin, though he distances himself from people, Baba sees, “Let’s go and not be afraid”
    • Leia, is a hard worker but his impression of her is that she “Makes an effort to strive for the goal”
    • As for Elise,  based on the circumstances surrounding the environment she grew up in, she wasn’t able to communicate with others. He wanted to show “courage” as she ‘s thrust into the outside world.
    • Tipo has various meanings, there’s some significance behind this..
    • Rowen, he’s the mood maker. Due to his age, his life long experience makes him see things from an angle the other characters cannot see, he’s there to tell them what they missed. Baba wants to express “depth” with this character.
  • Other Miscellaneous Notes
    • By using the link system, the strategy of battle widens. Though you can fight without linking, you’ll experience unprecedented pleasure by utilizing this feature.
    • By substituting characters, you could discover a boss’s weak point. This method makes for an enjoyable strategic battle.
    • Fighting Chat occurs often, but it has been adjusted so it doesn’t obscure the screen too much.
    • You can also adjust the degree of difficulty on this game.

Tales of Xillia: Rowen the Butler and Producer Comments

Famitsu showed off some new clearer screenshots of Rowen J Ilbert,  a 62 year old butler, is first met in a commercial town called, Kahara Shahl. He has a variety of attacks using his artes, saber, and aerial attacks. His special ability is called “Post Tuning,” where after he performs spirit artes he can fine-tune the attack.  He’s considered the brains of the group, with his vast knowledge and his ability to proficiently analyze situations.

Rowen has various attacks, this ” throwing knife” form hits enemies in the air.

Krein knows Jude and Milla are wanted criminals by order of the military.

The party visits the town of Kahara Shahl in La Shugal. By chance, they meet the feudal lord’s younger sister Drossle, and Lohen the butler. They are then warmly invited inside the feudal lord “Krein’s” mansion. However, he knows Jude and Milla were placed on the wanted list by the military. It seems the party’s relaxation is over, however….

After some passage of time, the party along with Rowen reach into a cave emitting a strange light.

Switch Party Member

Party members can be switched during battle, (see image). Press a directional key to switch characters in battle. For example in the image on the left, the player is actively using Milla. The player can replace her with  Jude who is not in the current battle. However you can not switch characters if one of them has incapacitated. The image above highlights a feature called “Fighting Chat” where party members will communicate with each other and say interesting things while fighting. Producer comments notes how fighting chat will pop up during the time characters are linked, or fighting a special enemy, or when you replace characters.

Producer Commentary

  • Alvin
    • He’s a handsome and openhearted man. He appears to be reconciling about another person from his past. Even though he is openhearted, he doesn’t let anyone step into the depths of  his heart. That part itself may have something to do with the person from his past.
  • Leia
    • When she was younger, she trained her artes with Jude. She’s described as a hard worker.
    • She’s the girl who starts to become an adult in contrast to Milla who is already an adult.
  • Elise and Tipo
    • Elise is the introverted girl with a stuffed animal toy named Tipo who talks for her.
    • Tipo’s origin is a major spoiler and Baba can’t really talk much about that.
  • Lohen
    • Suitably for his age, he is full of knowledge and experience.
    • He is calm and composed and has class, however at times he’ll become informal and say odd jokes.
    • He has an unexpected past.
    • Before Xillia, an aged main character within the series was nonexistent.
  • Events
    • Expect “Grandfather – Granddaughter” type events with Lohen and Elise
    • Playful scenes where Tipo bites Jude.
    • Elise yearns for Jude.
  • Chat and Animation
    • Players can see character conversations more than ever before. See how characters interact with each other in their daily lives.
    • Short chats are often inserted within the game so you can see conversations between the characters
    • Switching party members and during link mode, you can hear dialogue  from the characters while in battle.

Tales of Xillia: Elise Lutus and Ha Mil Village

New higher quality screenshots of Elise Lutus and Tipo were released today. Not much new information was provided, but, the official site updated with information about the town of Ha Mill. So we’ll recap Elise information with a sprinkling of Ha Mil.

Elise and Tipo

Elise Lutus holds her stuffed animal toy Tipo.

Elise Lutus is advanced at using spirit arts in spite of being only 12 years old. Since she was raised under special circumstances her communication skills are very weak. Instead, she holds a magical doll named Tipo who’s always talking for her.  Tipo also participates in battle with her using the powers of “Switching Tipo” to change the style of combat.

With Tipo On, Tipo stays on Elise’ back

“Tipo On” literally shows Tipo on her back. Elise will borrow some of Tipo’s power to attack at a distance with a cane. Tipo On also increases her spirit arts power.

With Tipo Off, Tipo floats away from Elise.

Tipo instead hurls itself at an enemy and bites them. During this attack, Elise is protected against enemy attacks for a few times.

Ha Mil

Ha Mil is a small village located within a valley of A Joule. It’s called the “Sunrise Region” because it is always illuminated like the morning sun. When coastal navigation was popular, the main road to the town became a majorly trafficked area, thus the town prospered. But as advancements in sea travel developed, the town later became forgotten. The main road to the town turned into a side road.

The main specialty of the town is a particular fruit tree. Around harvest time, the whole town is given the aroma of a sweet fragrance. You could also brew liquor from the fruit. The wine itself lights up similarly to the way how the spirit arts illuminates the trees within La Sugal’s metropolis city.

Storywise, Jude and co., first encounters Elise at the town of Ha Mil. It is here where she is being persecuted by the local villagers for some reason. Jude could not leave her in such an unhappy mood, he decides to take her out of the village.

Off the main road, Elise will follow the party through the gloomy forest, Samangan サマンガン樹界, to escape the eyes of La Sugal’s army. In this dense forest, many monsters await them. Will our heroes reach through it safely?

Tales of Xillia: Elise and Tipo

Tales of Xillia has a brand new scan of a new character named Elise Lutas エリーゼ・ルタス and her stuffed animal Tipo ティポ.

Elise and Tipo

Elise Lutus is 12 years old, has blond shoulder length hair, and wears a purple lolita outfit. She’s very advanced in spirit artes. Due to her growing up in a special environment, she doesn’t hold conversations very well, she hesitates when she speaks. It’s not that she dislikes people, but for the first time she has finally found a friend, the boy known as Jude. She encounters Jude within the rising nation of A Joule in a mountainous village called “Ha Mill” ハ・ミル. Once here, it appears Elise is being persecuted by the local villagers. Jude proposes a plan to take her out of the village.

Her stuffed animal, Tipo, is decked out in purple with a checkerboard pattern. Tipo can also talk. It appears depending on the current state in which Tipo is in, the style of battle changes.

Switching Tipo

So far we know Tipo has two states that can change the battle style. This term is called “Switching Tipo.”  The first state is known as “Tipo On“, this increases the power of spirit artes and it allows her to attack at a distance.

The second state is known as “Tipo Off.” In this state, the artes power rises and Tipo will perform a close range attack.

Tales of Xillia: Leia Rolando Scan

A brand new Tales of Xillia scan appeared recently showcasing  a new character, Leia Roland (15 years old). Leia is Jude’s childhood friend. She’s bright and cheerful, a poster child for her family’s inn. (She’s considered a 看板娘 [show girl], which in this case means she attracts patrons to the shop using her bubbly personality/looks.]  She is also a nurse in training, learning through observation, at a medical clinic within Jude’s parent’s home.

Leia Roland

So how does Leia Roland fit into the story? Well Jude’s parents owns a house in ル・ロンド Lu Rondo (Pending Title), which is the only treatment center in town. Jude visits the town to find a special ore/crystal that is required to cure some medical situation. With the aid of Leia, the party enters a closed mine to search for ore. The mine is pretty dark, and there appears to be some kind of danger lurking inside. How will this cane user, Leia, demonstrate her cane artes here?

Lu Rondo is a rural town far away from the capital city.

Leia Rolland, a new Tales of Xillia Character, can extend the reach of her cane to attack enemies at a distance.

Leia Roland, can use her cane to attack her surrounding area.

Leia has her own arts known as Katsushinkon Jutsu, which translates into “Life extending cane.”

  • Actions [活伸棍術] Katsushinkon Jutsu
    • For a certain amount of time, she can extend her cane’s reach and attack enemies at a distance.
    • She can attack surrounding enemies en masse.
    • At higher levels you can lengthen the time her cane is extended.

Resonance Artes

In addition, Tales of Xillia has a feature called 共鳴術技 “Resonance Artes,” This is where two characters perform artes together.  When you attack an enemy, a gauge (not shown in the screenshot) fills up. After it is above a certain condition, if the operating character uses a specific arte, the partner character will automatically use theirs, thus Resonance Artes are performed.

  • Resonance Artes / Link Artes
    • Jude (Evil Fist) + Milla (Wind Lance) = Severing Wind Edge
    • Milla (Fireball) + Alvin (Tiger Fang Decapitation) = Crimson Sword

Tales of Xillia Story Introduction and New Screenshots

In Tales Of Xillia, you can choose your main character.

The Two Nations of Liese Maxia

The world of Liese Maxia is separated by two distinct parts. The Northern area known as A Joule ア・ジュール (Pending Translation),  is a federation of small countries and tribes. It contains mountainous regions and dry wasteland. Despite being a rising nation, they have accomplished remarkable development. There are families of tribes who use monsters for daily life and militaristic affairs.

The southern area is a much larger country known as “La Sugal” ラ・シュガル (Pending Translation).  This region is blessed with warm climates and fertile ground. La Sugal is a country that is highly focused on spirit artes, research, and education. They even respect old customs and traditions. La Sugal’s king has been steadily advancing towards foreign invasion, causing a strain on the two countries.

Here in La Sugal’s capital city, Il Fan, Alvin, Jude Mathis, and Milla Maxwell will eventually meet.

How it all began

Jude Mathis is interning at the Il Fan hospital. It was very peaceful for him though he kept busy. One day something strange happens when the use of spirit arts resulted in an injured person visiting the hospital. Jude examined the patient and noticed how the spirits were acting odd, but he couldn’t understand the source of the problem. Jude received a message from a professor in charge and Jude left to visit the military research facility to find him.

In a shrine within a mountainous region, the spirit “Maxwell” (Milla Maxwell) inquired about the city of Il Fan. Maxwell sensed that a large number of spirits were extinguished at the same time. Maxwell determines that a crisis must be looming which could affect both spirits and humans. She decides to investigate the manner by visiting Il Fan. She found the source of the problem to be inside a military research facility. At first she decided to raid the facility on her own, however, she encounters a boy there.

Jude is puzzled by the girl who calls herself a spirit. She didn’t mind Jude at all and began to enter the research facility. Jude naturally followed as he was searching for his professor.

Inside the ラフォート研究所 LaFort Research Facility, they encounter this mysterious girl.

What is this strange device in the LaFort research facility?

The facility itself had a strange atmosphere. Inside they noticed a strange device, a mysterious girl who attacked, and a gate where one of its door suddenly closed.

The military research facility creating a secret weapon…

Inside this gate, they saw the military’s top secret project. However, they are then chased out like criminals by La Sugal’s troops. As they escape, Milla notices she is unable to use her spirits. They both reach up to a port harbor when the troops catch up to them. This is where Alvin jumps into the fray…

A skirmish about to go down in the port harbor.

Spirits are used in everyday society for La Sugal. Spirit arts can be used to speed up this boat.

Alvin joins Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell in Tales Of Xillia

Alvin is a brand new character who joins the Tales Of Xillia main cast.

The Story Thus Far

Within her shrine, Milla Maxwell sensed that a large number of spirits were disappearing. She decided to investigate the manner by visiting the metropolis of Il Fan. She discovered the origin of this phenomenon  was actually the military’s research facility. She decided to raid the place on her own to figure out the truth behind the mass disappearance. However, she then encountered a young boy, Jude Mathis, who was also on his way to this same facility. Jude and Milla decided to enter where they soon stumbled upon a highly classified top secret gigantic weapon and a strange experimental device. They were soon spotted and chased out like criminals!

After they escaped the secret research facility, Milla tried to summon her four spirits, but for some reason it did not work. Suddenly their pursuers catches up to them near a port harbor when Alvin jumps in…

Alvin is a mercenary who has wandered many parts of the world. He has good composure and always seem to act like an adult. He doesn’t try to say many things about himself, and hides his true intentions…

Special Abilities

Each Tales Character utilizes a special ability.

For Jude Mathis,  his ability is 集中回避 “Concentrated Evasion”. This allows him to backstep out of enemies attacks and sneak around to their rear.

Milla Maxwell has a special ability that allows her to use arts without any casting time. This 魔技 Magi art ability would change “Flare Ball” into “Flare Bomb” and detonate an explosion from her hand.

Alvin receives チャージ “Charge”. This allows him to use his large sword on the right hand, with the gun on the left hand at the same time. This changes each skill to “Charge Artes.” When Alvin gets stronger, the number of times he can use “Charge” increases.

Map Action

Around every corner, one should seek out impassible areas. A button will pop on the screen informing you to “jump” or “crouch” to get to a new area.

Tales of Xillia: The World of Liese Maxia

Tales of Xillia did a major overhaul on the official website. We learn a bit more of the world of Liese Maxia.

The World

Liese Maxia: A world cohabited by humans, monsters, and notably “the spirits” whom layed foundation for civilization through their arts. The humans give off a spiritual power called Mana from their brains. Mana is considered the energy of the world. The spirits consider this mana as food and live off of it. In return they allow humans to use their arts. This symbiotic relationship is the driving foundation of how arts are used in Liese Maxia.

The spirit’s artes are used in everyday society for general things as well. They can be used to move large ships, to construct houses, for lighting purposes, things of this nature. The spirits themselves are rarely seen by the human eye.

Countries

Tales of Xillia: Liese Maxia consists of two main countries, one preparing for invasion…

Liese Maxia has two main countries known as ラ・シュガル and ア・ジュール La Sugal  and A Joule (Pending Name) but there appears to be some conflict over the political hegemony between these two. In late years, La Suugal’s king is spreading his authoritarian rule and heading towards foreign invasion…

ラ・シュガル

La Sugal is located towards the south of Liese Maxia.  It has been blessed with a warm climate and fertile land. They focus on the traditions and customs of the past. Their civilization has fully embraced the spirit’s artes, and they put much emphasis in studying and research.  Their greatest symbol of prestige would have to be the largest city on Liese Maxia, known as イル・ファン or “Il Fan” (Pending Name). This city uses the latest in spirit artes to construct very dazzling buildings.

The government consists of a congress filled of nobles, but due to the King’s authoritarian order, the congress is just a title and nothing more.

ア・ジュール

This northern land of Tales of Xillia is described like a developing nation.

A Joule on the other hand is a federation of northern tribes and remote small countries joined together as a nation. The majority of this country consists of mountainous regions and dry wasteland. Some parts even consist of lots of snow. The current king has received lots of support due to his productive and charismatic nature. There are also tribes who have learned how to control monsters for their own purpose. They use them to carry out daily tasks and even perform militaristic affairs.

Tales of Xillia and the Meaning Behind the Title [Namco Bandai]

Namco Bandai  has revealed Tales of Xillia at the official website. According to producer Baba, the name Xillia arranged in English expresses the word “Xillion” which in turn means “countless.” For our case, “Xillion” is a play on words of “Zillion”. The letter X signifies the meaning of the unknown, or “crossing.” One’s life can accumulate with countless things, good or bad.

Now each “Tales of” game has a genre title, but this name was actually decided 2 days ago before its announcement. They decided to use “an rpg of unshakable faith” or you could say it is a game that stands firm.

Liese Maxia is the setting for Tales of Xillia

The story takes place in a land called リーゼ・マクシア or Liese Maxia. A world where humans, monsters, and spirits coexist. But more notably the game shows the theme of “Coexistance” with the relationship of humans and spirits. This is the key behind the story.

The graphics are different too, this time expressing something new, something different from the anime, watercolor style of previous games. The game invokes a sense of light and shadows, something atmospheric or an “airy” like quality.

Tales of Xillia utilizes the Double Raid – Linear Motion Battle.

As with every Tales game having a fancy name for its battle system, this game is no different. It is called the  “Double Raid – Linear Motion Battle” derived from the Linear motion battle system of previous Tales games. But according to Baba, this battle system is not only just a simple two person battle. The details will be revealed in due time.

Jude Mathis [ジュード・マティス] Tales of Xillia

The heroes of Tales of Xillia are Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, they are the two protagonist acting as 2 main characters. The story progresses based on which character you choose, and you will see the story from their viewpoint. Jude Mathis is voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga. He’s trying to be a doctor as much as possible and is a medical student. He has great concentration on rescuing an ally from battle.

Milla Maxwell [ミラ=マクスウェル] Tales of Xillia

Mira is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. Mira-Maxwell is accompanied by 4 spirits which she controls; earth, water, fire, and wind. She’s said to be the master of spirits!  She carries out her mission without hesitation. Having red eyes is an impressive phenomenon eh?

When it comes to the animation department, Baba chose unfotable. The theme song will be done by Ayumi Hamasaki. It is expected to be released on Playstation 3.
