Tales of Xillia and the Meaning Behind the Title [Namco Bandai]

Namco Bandai  has revealed Tales of Xillia at the official website. According to producer Baba, the name Xillia arranged in English expresses the word “Xillion” which in turn means “countless.” For our case, “Xillion” is a play on words of “Zillion”. The letter X signifies the meaning of the unknown, or “crossing.” One’s life can accumulate with countless things, good or bad.

Now each “Tales of” game has a genre title, but this name was actually decided 2 days ago before its announcement. They decided to use “an rpg of unshakable faith” or you could say it is a game that stands firm.

Liese Maxia is the setting for Tales of Xillia

The story takes place in a land called リーゼ・マクシア or Liese Maxia. A world where humans, monsters, and spirits coexist. But more notably the game shows the theme of “Coexistance” with the relationship of humans and spirits. This is the key behind the story.

The graphics are different too, this time expressing something new, something different from the anime, watercolor style of previous games. The game invokes a sense of light and shadows, something atmospheric or an “airy” like quality.

Tales of Xillia utilizes the Double Raid – Linear Motion Battle.

As with every Tales game having a fancy name for its battle system, this game is no different. It is called the  “Double Raid – Linear Motion Battle” derived from the Linear motion battle system of previous Tales games. But according to Baba, this battle system is not only just a simple two person battle. The details will be revealed in due time.

Jude Mathis [ジュード・マティス] Tales of Xillia

The heroes of Tales of Xillia are Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, they are the two protagonist acting as 2 main characters. The story progresses based on which character you choose, and you will see the story from their viewpoint. Jude Mathis is voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga. He’s trying to be a doctor as much as possible and is a medical student. He has great concentration on rescuing an ally from battle.

Milla Maxwell [ミラ=マクスウェル] Tales of Xillia

Mira is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. Mira-Maxwell is accompanied by 4 spirits which she controls; earth, water, fire, and wind. She’s said to be the master of spirits!  She carries out her mission without hesitation. Having red eyes is an impressive phenomenon eh?

When it comes to the animation department, Baba chose unfotable. The theme song will be done by Ayumi Hamasaki. It is expected to be released on Playstation 3.

  • Isn’t the studio called Ufotable instead of Unfoltable?
