What is AOL Lifestream? How to Use it or Remove it?

What is AOL Lifestream

AOL released a brand new update to AIM Lifestream, or should I say AOL Lifestream. It’s a service where AIM/AOL users can connect their social networking accounts, such as Twitter, Myspace, and even Facebook. If you use any of these services, AOL Lifestream allows you to publish your status updates to these networks. In essence, it streamlines the process of being on 3+ websites at once.

AOL Lifestream is also an app on iPhone and Google’s Android platform. If you are poor like me and can’t afford the two, you can join in the fun on different applications.

AOL Lifestream is available  through;

The Lifestream application does not allow you to communicate to other AOL and AIM members through IMs. This application’s sole purpose is to view updates through different websites and allow you to input your thoughts by liking or commenting on them.

Using AOL Lifestream

When you enter a status update in your application, everyone who has you on their buddy list will see it. They are able to “Like” or “Comment” on it as they please. You’ll see a nifty little notification at the bottom of the AOL Lifestream application which shows you what new updates you have in social networking sites, as well as new comments from AIM members.

Clicking on the globe icon will show you a list of trending topics. These are just the most popular word in everyone’s status update. As you can see, AIM is popular amongst kids who are bored out of their mind with homework.

If you notice, there is a filter section that allows you to view only one network. If you want to see only twitter updates, type the word twitter. Or if you want to look up specific friend just type the first part of their name. In fact you can type shortcuts for the various things like twit, mysp, face, digg, photo, video, etc.

Removing AOL Lifestream

If you add random people to your buddy list, their lifestream updates will show up.

The screenshot above is a great example of someone who may not understand the functions of AOL Lifestream. If you add someone on your buddy list, you will automatically follow their lifestream updates. You can alternatively view anyone’s lifestream updates without following them by viewing their buddy info or inputting their screen name through:

http://lifestream.aol.com/stream/screenname

If you don’t want to see a certain person’s lifestream updates, remember to remove them from your buddy list.

If you want to turn off AOL Lifestream, head to the Settings Page. Clicking the trashcan icon will remove your connections to these services. Alternatively you can also click the drop down box and select “No one -Private”. Don’t forget the drop down box for the “AIM” service which will stop any of your status updates and away messages from showing up in the Lifestream tab. If you scroll down further you can disable commenting by selecting “Only You (private)”.

Thoughts

Generally I love the new design AOL is taking with the AIM website. All of the ads are gone and everything is streamlined. The same design style goes on to AOL Lifestream, now if only they could apply it to the message boards. As for the Adobe AIR Application, I do like how it instantly notifies me at the bottom of the screen. I’m not sure if this application is useful per say, it’s more like a time waster. It’s practical to use this service within the AIM program, unless you are mobile and have to rely on the iphone or android app.

  • i would like to know how i could find out the date that i added a certain buddy

  • It doesn’t appear when you add someone, but at they may alert you if someone added you to their buddy list, provided that the Buddy List share option in Aim 6 through Aim 7 is up.

  • Accidently I and a friend got on Lifestream by an error. I have worked for hours trying to get her and another friend off, as for an elderly period it isn’t easy When I bring her scree up to write on IM, under her name it always says 46 days 23 hours and can’t get rid of it or get her name off Lifestream. Just hate this new technical stuff. I have 7.2.6.1 version of AIM. Please help!!!! Done everything according to AOL/Aim help. Nothing works.

  • Did she follow the instructions in this post and set everything to ‘No one -Private’

  • I would like to know how to get off of Lifestream. Completely. Want to close down the service, stop it, terminate it, have it cease, put it on a bus to nowhere…

Your post does not actually say how to remove it, only how to remove services FROM it.

    • Merle: The AIM Lifestream service is tied to every AOL and AIM screen name. There is no way to take it off completely from the account. Just like AOL Profiles, this service exists on ALL screen names.

The point however is to remove ALL services from it so that these status updates do not show to other people on your buddy list as well as other people not on your buddy list.

When it’s deactivated it should give you the “bunny” message for example

      http://lifestream.aol.com/stream/beta

I highly speculate in the future, the Lifestream will serve as our new profiles once we leave Bebo.

      • Well, that’s no fun at all.
Would have been nice not to be forced onto a useless service…thanks, anyway.

I really need to find something to replace AIM.

    • Hey Merle,

I’m with you! I am getting nasty lude messages and I am sick and tired of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When someone adds you and they are able to see your lifestream updates, if you block them can they still see your lifestream updates? If so, is there a way to block them from not seeing it?

  • Some of this lifestream business is a bit confusing. If you add somebody to your buddy list, they are notified, no matter who they are? Yes or No?

  • so i was looking at someone’s pictures that werent on my buddy list to try to figure out if it was the right person. but at the top of the screen it said “remove friend” when i never added them. Will they be notified that i added them?

  • AOL Lifestram is just another way for them to make money….they are trying to connect to the 40 billion dollar site “FaceBook”….Personally…AOL Life stream is a poorly designed waste of time…
I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO REMOVE IT>>>>

    IT SUCKS

    • still cant get rid of lifestream

  • First, AOL had simple profiles, It was easy/fast to set-up or change it.

Second, AOL then switched to BEBO (Oh they paid over $800m) it was harder to set up than the first profiles.

Third, yet again AOL has done a 360 and now has another version called Life-streem. This “New one” must have been set up by grade school kids.
This is more like online cartoon time.
WTF how about asking members for input since they are the ones who use these.

  • whant to remove mylifesteam…how cant i ?

  • you made us creat reg porfiles onaol then that was closed andtransfered to be bo i loged on today and nwo tat is gone and jus thav ethis life stream.I cannot open any ones profile not to mention my old profile.

how do we add move our old profile info with all the work that went into it with pics and info. this in nwo anoying and they other comment is right ask frist the users what thye want!!!!.

  • Ah yet again AOL gives those of you that prowl the internet yet another way to link up with others online…even making it easier by linking everything together. AOL used to be a great tool to access information–great information for school projects and even family connections. Sadly, it’s become the easiest way to ruin a marriage. Too much time and tallent is being spent on “connecting” everyone to everyone and “fusing” the information for privacy…I truly hate you AOL and all of the internet sites for allowing the Computer to become the ugly device it has. It’s a damn shame because it could be used as a fantastic learning tool instead of the trash it has become.

  • AHH…..SCOO THIS! WHY CANT DINGALING AOL GO BACK TO THE OLD AOL-AIM PROFILES THAT EVERYONE KNEW AN LOVED? THEY WERE SO SIMPLE AN EASY TO READ AN USE…..AS FAR AS THIS SOCIAL NETWORKIN CRAP..THATS FINE FOR THE 13 YEAR OLD TEENYBOPPERS….WHO WANT TO BEBO ALL DAY AN NIGHT…BUT FOR MOST OF US OLDER FOLK…..WERE TO OLD TO DRAW “GRAPHITI” ON SOMEONES “BOARD” (WHATEVER THE HELL THAT IS) BRING BACK THE OL STUFF AOL…YOU MORONS….

    • I agree with you, :) what about us who would like to connect and meet with others?

  • I don’t like a service being pushed down my throat. I am 47 years old. I am not on facebook, I am not on twitter. I use AIM once in awhile to chat with old friends. I know – I am a weirdo. I resent this goddamn Lifestream showing up one day and not giving me the option of whether I want to use it or not.

I am not on My Space, Facebook, Twitter and whatever the hell is next because I do not want to be bothered with this bullshit. Who cares if I changed my status from away to available? I don’t.

AOL just expects everyone to go to their big “bump pussies” with Facebook party, and I am not. A friend told me about several programs like Trillian and Pidgen that let you chat without knowing that Suzy tried tequila for the first time.

AOL used to suck. Then it seemed like they had pretty good content and they didn’t suck. Now they have their head up everyone’s else’s collective ass trying desperately to get some facebook traffic. You, AOL, officially suck again.

  • GOOD POST NIK…..IM 47 TOO AN A LIL TOO OLD TO DRAW “GRAPHITI” ON SOMEONES BOARD…THAT CRAPS GREAT WHEN YUR 13……NOT IN YUR LATE 40′S….WHY CANT THESE IDIOTS AT AOL JUST GO BACK TO THERE TRIED AN TRUE PROVEN WAYS AN STOP EXPIERIMENTING??? FREAKIN BEBO REALLY SUCKED…..THAT WAS THE WORST…..LOOKS LIKE THIS LIFESTREAM SHIT AINT MUCH BETTER….SIGH….

  • Well for everyone, as we SLOWLY move into the transition by leaving BEBO and entering whatever the new profile system will be, I’ll be sure to post it. AOL has been pretty mum on details and slow on Betas sooo. Unfortunately no news as to how to get your profiles back, how to transfer your profiles, and what the new profiles will be like.

  • Where is this “trash can” BUTTON to remove a lifestream??? I CANT FIND IT!

    • It’s still there.
When you log into lifestream, Click on Account at the top > My Services
then you’ll see the list of services with the trash can.

  • I cant seem to remove my status updates ono aol lifestream. It gives me an activity error and says:

“We were unable to remove this activity.

It may have already been removed.

    Details com.socialthing.LifestreamApiException: Invalid activityId”

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be wonderful!

  • dedicated2roses…i have the same exact question…its driving me crazy!!! I hope someone is able to answer your question!! And this only started in the last month that your unable to remove it. I really hope someone can answer this lol

  • Hofstr88…i sent my feedback to aol and hopefully they can do something about it and it I dont get a reply from them soon or this problem is fixed I feel like I should spam them with a list of complaints I have…..

    • Dedicated2roses….THEY FINALLY FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!! It must have been your feedback to them so thank you so much!!!

  • Well aol thats did i will be cancelling my connection to you and lifestream
Want to lose customers well your doing right! People who paid will stop and just use for e-mail why should i do this? Pay for something I can’t use to chatt with friends.

  • How do I get a buddy out of family and put them into recent buddies?I IM with this buddy at least once a day but it won’t go to recent buddies.

  • I want to check a old lifestream update i put up in july can i go back that far? or is there a certainn way to go back that far?

  • Is there a way to not follow a certain person or persons w/o removing them from your buddy list? I like following some of my friends, but I’d like to remove somebody from it that posts about 10-20 lifestream posts a day that are annoying and redundant. If it’s not possible now, maybe put it in one of the updates in the future.

    Thanks,
    Annoyed Friend

  • If you want to remove ‘Facebook Chat’ on the AIM thing.
Just right click on ‘Facebook Friends’ and click edit ‘Facebook Chat Settings’.
Then click ‘Remove Facebook Chat from AIM’.

    Hope this helped!!

  • how do u view lifestream from ichat?

  • yeah nice that aol added me to this automatically. WIthin 5 minutes i got 3 creepers bothering me. Thank you aol for being MORE of a piece of shit.

  • someone is pretending to be me on lifestream and using my pictures…. how do i get this fake profile erased?

  • What does it mean if someone is following your lifestream?

    • Ummm that they are stalking you???

  • First off, I have been on AOL since 1996 and back then it was so simple and it was a nice internet experience. However, when AOL started changing all the profile business around and switching to BEBO and now to this Lifestream crap it became frustrating for those who lost all of their profile info. AOL never once asked members what they wanted or would like to see happen with their AOL experience. Instead AOL just makes all of these changes and then calls it “Enhancing your AOL experience”. Well excuse me you morons at AOL, but My AOL experience has NOT been enhanced, but rather a NIGHTMARE!! I have been trying for a week now to remove photos from My Lifestream bullchit and the ‘DELETE PHOTO” button does NOT work. So I sent a message to AOL from one of these message boards (that are supposed to be helpful) 4 times, and this morning I get a response email from AOL telling me to try help.aol.com. Sorry AOL but there are NO solutions to this problem or any other Lifestream problems found on help.aol.com. Why is that?? Because AOL was so busy trying to get BIG by hooking up with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and all the other sites out there that in the process of trying to get BIG, they have angered alot of AOL Members and done nothign but make a MESS out of AOL and the Members AOL experience. I would suggest that AOL withdraw their heads out of their ASSES and STOP trying to enhance our AOL experience by RUINING what used to be a GREAT service. IF IT AIN’T BROKE …DON’T FIX IT!!! And why don’t you try ASKING AOL Members what they want and then do NOT put it into service UNTIL you have ALL the bugs worked out. And in the meantime, FIX this Lifestream bullshit so that I can delete photos of my old boyfriend OFF of there!!!!
