Stop Quicktime from Playing Mp3 In Internet Explorer

This is sometimes the most annoying thing about Quicktime. You set it’s file associations not to play Mp3s yet someway somehow it still plays it. The other annoying thing is that it takes over MP3 association everytime you reinstall it. So lets disable quicktime from playing Mp3s one more time!
Restoring MP3 Associations
1. Open Windows Media Player
2. Press ALT+T and Click Options
3. Click File Types
4. Check Mark Mp3 and Click OK
5. Close Internet Explorer and Reopen it.
Removing Quicktime Association
1. Open Quicktime in Start > Programs > Quicktime
2. Click Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences
3. Click [File Types] Tab and Uncheck MP3
4. Click [Browser] Tab
5. Click MIME Settings, and Uncheck MP3
6. Click OK Twice
Setting Default Associations
1. Click On Start > Set Program Access And Defaults
2. Click Custom and Scroll Down to Default Media Player
3. Choose a Default Media Player like Winamp
4. Press OK
You can check to make sure it works.
Also note that you can reassociate your original Mp3 Player. If your using Winamp, it will automatically associate with Mp3s as soon as you open it. This will allow you to now Open or Save an Mp3 when you click on an mp3 link.

Cool!
Thanks a lot for that. I can’t bear this quicktime shit.
I know I seriously hate it.
Yeah, thanks! I needed that info!!!
oh! thanks so much for your clear instruction! it helps me a lot.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Quicktime has
been driving me crazy since the day I got my ipod.
There is somethign fishy going on with my version. Maybe because it is the free one, not the pro.
I have disabled MP3 in file types AND MINE and the bloody thing still plays mp3s in IE.
I will reboot now, as that is the only thing I have not tried.
This information was tested with Free version BTW.
Restoring MP3 Associations work for me. Thanks
nice,thank you
Excellent steps, got Media Player back associated in about 22 seconds!!!!
You may want to add to your tech that you need to reassociate default player with windows media player 1st.
This breaks tha quicktime link, then you can reassociate again with something like Itunes.
I tried reassociating with Itunes directly mutiple times and it did not work.
I had to do the above, and then poof, no more annoying QT problem.
Dont work for me in Vista x64
I tried also disable QuickTime plugins in IE and disable autoplay in QT Options but doesnt helps me. I dont know what to do with this yet
Now it just gives me an error, “quicktime 5 needed to play.” I’ve done everything people have told me and damn quicktime still haunts my browsers.
Simply doesn’t work. Shit time still plays MP3s even with everything unticked.
Same here, MP3 already *not* selected, in QT and still it plays with qt in internet explorer.
The key to making this work is to let Windows Media Player take over association for MP3s. If you skip that step then Quicktime will still take over.
Hey,
It just doesn’t work for me, I use Winamp Default….
and mp3 is already uncheckd in MIME settings!!
what am i doing rong? !
Did you set Windows Media Player to play Mp3s first?
Thank you very much.
I hate running QuickTime on ie.
Thanks for the good instructions! You don’t know how much I messed with settings to try and get this Quicktime to stop taking everything over!
Thank you so much, Quicktime is such a pain in the, let’s say neck, they just do not belong in Windows, they do not understand the OS.
This was really helpful.
Thanks a bunch – This was driving my crazy!!
Thankya kindly… Apple and Quicktime are some slimy shameful stinky sons of swines for treating good people like this.
Several years ago I tried to find an answer to this sticky Quicktime nonsense but finally gave up and left my wife’s computer as is. Yesterday I had to try iTunes just one more time, and that reminded me of the Quicktime problem. Long story short, I ran into the same endless queries with useless answers all over the Internet before finding your site. Fixed in a jiff. Sent you 5 dollars via the Donate button. Thx.
Why thank you. It took a while to do it but it’s a process that must be repeated every time.
Thank you so much. A friend was having a problem on their computer and this fixed it up for them after much poking around with other stuff I found on the net that did not work.
I cannot believe that Apple has the audacity to make the commercials they make. This computer was running fine until Apple got into it. Their commercials may be clever, but they aren’t accurate.
Thanks for the help.
Maybe i’m doing something wrong, but it didn’t work for me (Windows 7 and IE8).
The following more drastic approach did work:
- Control Panel
- Programs
- Default Programs
- Set your default programs
- Windows Media Player
- Use this program as default
@kent, the last part of the process of removing it is exactly the same thing you described, it’s just that Windows 7 put it in another location.
You rock! I thought I would never be able to rid Explorer of the Quicktime disease.
Thanks! So cool!
It’s not working for me. I’ve done everything as described, including setting WMP to play mp3s first. But it keeps opening in the quicktime plugin.
Kent’s method worked for WMP. But it doesn’t seem to work for Winamp for some reason. At least Quicktime is out though I guess, and if I want to save an mp3, I can right-click and “save target as”.
Thanks for the concise, effective solution.
Not it IS opening in Winamp like I wanted. I tried closing and reopening IE, But that didn’t do it. Maybe restarting the pc helped fix it. I’m not sure.
Anyway … Thanks guys!
it still didnt giv me internet to mp3
Cool, many thanks! I’m fad up with this Quicktime … I really needed that, THX again
This worked for me. Uncheck a couple more things in Quicktime.
From above:
Removing Quicktime Association
1. Open Quicktime in Start > Programs > Quicktime
2. Click Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences
3. Click [File Types] Tab and Uncheck MP3
4. Click [Browser] Tab
5. Click MIME Settings, and Uncheck MP3
My MP3 – MPEG layer III movies and streams was already unchecked.
Be sure to uncheck MP3 if it is checked, but while in MIME Settings, also uncheck
MPEG – MPEG system, video, and audio files
I also unchecked
Audio – Audio only file formats
Now Internet Explorer asks me what to do with the file when I click on an mp3 link.
When I tell it to “Open”, it opens in my ‘default’ player which is Winamp.
No more stupid Steve Jobs hijacking.
