Click here to change screen name color!

Some people might not like the screen name colors in Aim 6, and may want it to be red and blue, or blue and green. Here’s a quick guide on how to change the colors of your screen name and to change the colors of other people’s screen name.

To change Your Screen Name colors in Aim 6

Navigate to the directory below. Depending on your Version of Aim. If you can’t find it, upgrade to the latest version of aim at aim.com

Please note that # represents your AIM version. You must manually locate this directory through Windows Explorer. Simply copying and pasting the path below will not work. The path below applies to any Aim 6 version, including Aim 6.8 and Aim 6.9.

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\
imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im\default.css

  • Open the default.css file in C:\windows\notepad.exe
  • Scroll down to .localname
  • Next You will have to Find an HTML Color Value to input.
  • Visit Colors, and select a color.
  • Notice the 6 digit code combination at the top.
  • This Code is what you will type under local name.

.localName {

font:12px Arial;

color:#D73306;

}

  • Highlight over the Color Code. In this example it is #D73306
  • Type the Color Code from the Website that you chose.
  • Put a ‘#’ before the code and make sure there is a ‘;’ after your code

.localName {

font:12px Arial;

color:#000000;

}

  • Press File > Save

To Change the Screen Name Color of the person you IM.

In default.css find any .remote name

.remoteName0 {

font:12px Arial;

color:#0F0595;

}

  • Change the color by inserting a color value just like you did above.

Other .remoteName deal with the color of screen names in chatrooms. You can change any of these screen name colors the same way you did before. These colors will be given to people at random so do not expect to see much changes unless you drastically changed them all.

  • Hi I dont get where to go first? Like you said you cant just copy and paste, you have to go through internet explorer. Like can you tell me exactly where to go and do?

  • I didn’t say “Internet Explorer”, I said “Windows Explorer”, If you click on “Computer” or “My Computer” icon on your desktop, you’ll be inside Windows Explorer. However if you do not understand how to click on folders to reach the destination shown at the top of the post. I highly suggest not trying this out.

  • I am using 6.8.14.6 and for some reason, the changes save but the IM window doesnt reflect the color changes. Is there a reason why?

  • umm are there like any aim6 codes that you can put on your away and like everyperson that looks at your away see there sn on it

    ex. hey lwrarenc ryome im in a meeting

  • hey i love this site

  • Yeah type in Hello %n ..it’ll put in their Screen Name…

  • It’s strange. I edited the file without problems, but the color change doesn’t always work. It seems to randomly show up as the color I changed it to. Sometimes with a certain person, it will be the color, and other times, it won’t be. Is there any other settings that can be overriding then change?

  • So only I can see the change?

    • Only you can see the change

  • theres nothing in my im folder

  • its not letting me save it….?

  • I really wish the AIM team would make this an actual part of the program. The red and blue is distasteful. S:

    Thanks for the tips! :]<3

  • i dont get what to do with that.. if i download it, how ? or if not i dont know what to do.
    C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\
    imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im\default.css

  • I suggest reading up on how to use Windows Explorer. I don’t suggest trying this method if you don’t know how to browse folders. This website below will show you an example of the folder structure and how to navigate it.

  • whenever i try to save something on the notepad, it says

    “cannot create the C:/ Program
    Files/AIM6/services/imapp ……

    make sure the path and file name are correct.”

  • Right click on Notepad.exe icon and click Run as Administrator. Then you may drag the css file into notepad and edit it from there.

  • i did all that stuff n saved it buht it didnt work n the colors didnt show up what did i do rong?

  • Ok, so you lost me at the first default.css file in C:\windows\notepad.exe

  • No. Make sure you pay attention to the Yellow part. That’s very important.

    You open the default.css file within notepad.

    You can do this by opening notepad first, then dragging the default.css file which is located at

    C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\
    imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im\default.css

    Now the reason why it says Ver6_#_#_# is because everyone who installs aim will have different versions. There’s no way I can predict what version number everyone has so please read this article for better understanding on how you would navigate to that directory.
