Some people might not like the screen name colors in Aim 6, and may want it to be red and blue, or blue and green. Here’s a quick guide on how to change the colors of your screen name and to change the colors of other people’s screen name.

To change Your Screen Name colors in Aim 6

Navigate to the directory below. Depending on your Version of Aim. If you can’t find it, upgrade to the latest version of aim at aim.com

Please note that # represents your AIM version. You must manually locate this directory through Windows Explorer. Simply copying and pasting the path below will not work. The path below applies to any Aim 6 version, including Aim 6.8 and Aim 6.9.

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\
imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im\default.css

  • Open the default.css file in C:\windows\notepad.exe
  • Scroll down to .localname
  • Next You will have to Find an HTML Color Value to input.
  • Visit Colors, and select a color.
  • Notice the 6 digit code combination at the top.
  • This Code is what you will type under local name.

.localName {

font:12px Arial;

color:#D73306;

}

  • Highlight over the Color Code. In this example it is #D73306
  • Type the Color Code from the Website that you chose.
  • Put a ‘#’ before the code and make sure there is a ‘;’ after your code

.localName {

font:12px Arial;

color:#000000;

}

  • Press File > Save

To Change the Screen Name Color of the person you IM.

In default.css find any .remote name

.remoteName0 {

font:12px Arial;

color:#0F0595;

}

  • Change the color by inserting a color value just like you did above.

Other .remoteName deal with the color of screen names in chatrooms. You can change any of these screen name colors the same way you did before. These colors will be given to people at random so do not expect to see much changes unless you drastically changed them all.

    umm how do you link screen names for aim 4.7?

  2. You can’t, you gotta download Adium at adium.com and try to sign on multiple screen names

  3. Babii_Gal UNITED STATES Jul 19th 2007

    i dont get it

    are you talking about the IM program for mac osx: adiumx?

  5. Adiumx.com has Adium,

  6. THANKS A LOT!! i love this

  7. It wont let me save it, it keeps saying it cant create the file. So I deleted the file and now it says I dont have permission to save there.

  8. Permission? Sounds like your not the administrator for your Windows Account. What version of AIM do you have, Click Help > About Aim and type the numbers.

  9. It does sound like I’m not the admin, but this is my computer. I just bought it and set it up, so I definitely am. AIM version is 6.1.41.2

  10. If Aim is Closed.
    When you open the CSS file, what does the
    error message say exactly word for word.

    When you make changes to this CSS file what exactly does the file say when you save it.

  11. There is no error message when I open the file, only when I try to save it. The exact message is “Cannot create the C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\imApp\ver6_1_41_2\content\im\default.css file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct.”

  12. When you open the CSS file what program does it use to display it.

  13. Notepad

  14. I checked out that message on Google, it seems to be a WINDOWS VISTA specific message for users who do not run an application under administrator mode, including notepad. Windows Vista does this by default.

    You can either run notepad.exe as administrator.

    Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Notepad, and then click Run as administrator

    Or

    Copy the CSS file, and Paste that file into My Documents folder, after your done editing, overwrite that file back in the aim 6 folder.

  15. Is there a way to edit the popup notifications to make them easier to read. for example make the font bigger or make them stay up longer. i checked the files in imapp>version>content>toaster but had no luck.

  16. great tip….i didn’t know there was a CSS document in aim. i got my colors back to the original…thanks!

    Hey Mike, it’s Carlos. I’m answering some questions on the message board for AOL, but i can’t seem to find the download for Transferring the buddy lists, talk to me on AIM when you can.

    Hey Mike, it’s Michael. I’m just curious as to how the Aim 6.8 skin will look like, the one that you’ll be releasing tomorrow.

    If you can, please email me a copy of the files so that I can test run it tonight, before you release it.

    mhilliard14@aol.com

  22. Carlos, Transferring buddy List is the same as Saving Buddy List which instructions can be found here

    Michael, the update was meant for Feb 2008, not Feb 8th. It will probably be Windows XP lookalike or something entirely new.

    Thanks! I sooooo hated the color change on AIM. This works for ver6_5_5_2 as well, btw. Thanks again!

  29. Hey I don’t get howta open the file in Notepad

  30. Sarina UNITED STATES Apr 30th 2008

    Sadly, it’s not working for me. I downloaded AIM 6.5 and followed the instructions as said above. But, after I save the information, the colors don’t appear to be any different than the default which are navy blue and rusty red. I only see the colors I chose for a split second when I X-out the chat box and re-click the screen name of the person I was talking to. Does this make any sense?

    I hope this helps you figure out what trouble I’m having with this color change procedure. Thank you. Please respond ASAP. I’m looking forward to changing the colors! :)

  33. alissa UNITED STATES Jun 24th 2008

    can i change the colors with am 5.9? i want 6.8 but my sisters doesnt like it.

  34. I have tested this out on Aim 6.8 and this still works. Since Aim 6.8 has 2 different versions floating about, it might be annoying for people to actually find the file.

  40. I am having such a difficult time understanding this. When I had AIM 6, my default colors in an IM were green and blue. I upgraded to AIM 6.8 and it is the traditional red and blue. I tried typing the directory in, but it keeps saying that it doesn’t exsist. I opened the actual program of AIM into Notepad and the word ‘color’ was no where to be found, there was millions of symbols [not even letters]. If you can help me that would be great. I want the blue and green instead of the traditional colors. Thank you.

  41. Nevermind, I figured it out. My version wasn’t 6_8_10_1, it was 6_8_12_1. Your tutorial was awesome. I was just having some difficulties in the beginning. Thank you for posting this.

  42. How do you open the noteped? What do you go to? and once your there where is .localname?? thanks.

  43. Wat r u talking abought I cant even get the notepad thingy to work we are not brain sergeins!
    that was horrible advice

    how do you link screen names for aim 6?

  45. Hey mike.

    I’m having no difficulites with this until I reach the im folder file thing in ‘content.’ When i get there, I open the ‘im’ file but when i open it its empty. so i just click it once to hilight it and i try to open it in notepad but nothing comes up.

    Help?

    If this is confusing I could make a few screenshots for you.

    -tati.

  46. Oh and also instead of saying ver6_8_10_1, mine says ver6_5_12_1.
