Workaround Suggested By Botched

Please follow the steps in order as they appear below:

  • 1) Manually Locate the folder:

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im

Note that ver6_#_#_# represents your version number of AIM. It will change each time you upgrade AIM. Simply copying and pasting this path into Windows Explorer will not work.

You must manually go to this folder starting with “My Computer” for Windows XP or “Computer” for Windows Vista. Click on your C:\ Drive  and follow the path as it is shown in step one. You need to end up at a folder called “im” to find the file. Otherwise you can optionally search for the file named “template.html” by clicking Search in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

  • 2) Right Click Template.html (icon should be a page with an e)
  • 3) Click Properties
  • 3) Click Change
  • 4) Select Notepad
  • 5) Click OK Twice

Workaround #2 by Spork

  • 1) Start Internet Explorer
  • if it’s IE7, hit the ALT key
  • 2) Click on Tools
  • 3) Click on Internet Options
  • 4) Click on the Advanced Tab
  • 5) Click on the Reset button

If you’re running an older version then IE7, maybe click on Restore Defaults button.

JRE 6U1 did not work for me.

  2. Ok Thanks, well You’ll have to try toubleshooting it until it works. If you find anything post back

  3. Anonymous Jul 13th 2007

    neither worked for me

  4. Lisa Marie Aug 5th 2007

It didn’t work for me either….

  5. Hi. I tried the Java tip and it didn’t fix it. My sister had the problem, not I. Anyways, how I fixed her problem was simple:
    1) Start Internet Explorer
if it’s IE7, hit the ALT key
    2) Click on Tools
    3) Click on Internet Options
    4) Click on the Advanced Tab
    5) Click on the Reset button
If you’re running an older version then IE7, maybe click on Restore Defaults button.

She was running IE7 so I don’t know if the Restore Defaults button would work. It should though.

If it works for you and you’d like to drop me an IM to let me know my screen name is Spork Schivago. Being a struggling college student, donations are always welcome, ie, money, soda, candy bars, etc, etc. {:-)

  6. The following worked for me:

    1> In IE7 click on Tools>Internet Options
2> Click on the Programs tab
3> Click on the drop-down box for HTML Editor
    4> Choose Notepad
    5> Click on Okay
    6> Close IE7

  7. I’ll suggest that but i have to see if it works for other people.

  8. No notepad option in IE7

  9. I have Mozilla Firefox. What do I go under for that? There isn’t and Internet Options on that. I want to Im soooo badly!?!?!?

  10. This only applies to IE not Mozilla Firefox.

I managed to fix my friends AIM that was having that very same problem. Not sure if its a workaround or a fix just yet but hopefully this will work for some people.

    1) Run a search for template.html
    2) the file should be in an aim folder in program files
    3) right click on the template.html file and click properties
4)there should be a thing near the top that says open with. hit the change button
    5) select notepad
    6) enjoy.

This worked for us and i hope it works for you

  12. Thanks I’ll ask some people to try that and see what happens.

  30. Keesha May 23rd 2008

Hey thanks a lot that first one worked for me! I thought I was never gonna find a solution to the problem!

  31. Ok I had the same problem where as all of the fixes did not work. I did however tried something else that did: Followed the first workaround where you change the template.html to open with notepad, however, instead of using notepad i chose firefox (may work with internet explorer).
    …and Voila it worked.
Be sure to make sure your aim is off as well as any processes related to aim…just to make sure.

    Hope this helps :)

  32. thanks botched… your’s worked for me

  33. Stephanie Jul 9th 2008

Wow thanks so much. Workaround #1 worked for me. Ive had this problem forever and it was so annoying. Thanks again =]

  34. Anonymous Jul 15th 2008

Workaround one worked for me as well, however, when I close AIM and shut down my computer, the issue happens once more and I have to go through it all again. Very annoying! Also, the first time I changed the html editor to notepad, it worked, but now I have to use Firefox for it to read at all. :(

  35. pollyannhs Aug 11th 2008

I have vista nothing worked….please tell me what to do!

  36. Pollyann, have you tried workaround 1 and were you successful in following all the steps?

  37. Botched Aug 16th 2008

I have seen that my previous workaround does not work with later versions of aim or on vista. So and i am not sure if this will work because i do not seem to have a AIM with this problem. So i must rely on you guys to give me some feedback to see if this theory works.

First open up search and search through all files on the computer if it lets you select that option. type in .html

Second if a file comes up i want you to right click the file and select open with, this should bring up a little side menu. from this click choose program.

Third) a screen should come up with a list of programs. Locate firefox on this list, click on firefox and then click the checkbox at the bottom that says Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

Then i would try AIM, hopefully this will work and unfortunately i do not have a computer with Vista on it so i cannot walk you through the steps in Vista yet. Remember this is only a theory. If it works or does not work please post back.

  38. Borges Aug 21st 2008

Botch, good man. Botch’s fix works for vista and Aim 6.8. Before I read this I tried changing the html files with FIREFOX. Yet still nothing happened. But in Botch’s fix you have to go into start>search>type in template. You should see templateUser. Change the program to firefox that way, because for some reason in the folder itself, trying to change the file to another program doesn’t work. Thanks Botch :)

  39. Thank you for sharing! I tried the first one and it’s now all fixed=D Thanks!

  40. uhgggggg none of these worked HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

  41. Patrick Nov 16th 2008

  44. Kristin D. Dec 30th 2008

I need help like really really REALLY bad. Ive tried all of these methods and none of them worked and im getting really frusterated!

  45. Kristin D. Dec 30th 2008

please someone email me or IM me beautyfullxxmess@aol.com and thats my aim sn too.

  46. dude, none of these are working for me. plz help ASAP. when i go into program files, template.html is not there….. any suggestions? i am running out of time…. plz help.

  47. It’s not in Program files. You skipped all the folders.

    C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im

You have to go to this folder above. You can’t just stop at Program Files. While your in Program Files, find the Aim6 folder, and click on that, then click on services… etc.

  48. omg!!!! i found it!!! if neither of these work for you, try
doing the first part. then after you click program files go up to the search bar and type template.html. right click the one that has template by itself, click properties. look for opens with and click change. click the down arrow next to other programs and choose notepad. then make sure that notepad is highlighted and click ok. then click apply and then ok. THAT SHOULD FIX IT ENJOY!!!!! x]

  49. Cubang8tor Apr 16th 2009

the first fix worked for me I fixed it and the version was for Vistas
    vista

  50. i went to program files..and i looked for…. template.html ..still not there..and i tryed #1 and #2…still not working ..
    PLS HELP

  51. G , you can not stop at Program Files.

You need to understand folder structure.

    C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im

This is the folder you need to be even though the post says:

“Click on your C:\ Drive and then Click Program Files, and follow the path as it is displayed above.”

You seem to be ignoring the part that says follow the path. Template.html is not in program files, its inside the last folder called “im.”

    C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\imApp\ver6_#_#_#\content\im

To avoid future confusion. I’m going to remove that part and assume you know how to navigate folders.

  52. WBmike,
thanks so much for the help!!
    i found the file…!!

  53. kristin May 12th 2009
