This post lists the most common problems with Aim 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5 that may occur. Not every aim problem will be shown here, you should click Aim Problems to find a list of other issues that may not be documented here. Any problem which shows up in red means that no fix has been found. Problems that show up as Green are fixed!
Cannot Send Folders
There is a current issue where you will not be able to send folders to people with Aim. This issue will be fixed by AOL, no other actions are needed to fix this problem other than waiting for AOL to repair it.
Blank IM Windows
Users have noted IM Windows have appeared blank. Unfortunately there has not been any information on how to fix this problem, however if as a group we actively troubleshoot this problem, we are very likely to find a solution. Please post in this thread or comment below about any methods you used to try to fix this problem even if they didn’t work.

Methods that Do Not Work So Far Include:
- Uninstalling and Reinstalling AIM.
Settings Error Before Sign In
Brian suggested, Uninstalling AIM, and Deleting the Folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\WindowsUSERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL OCP\
C:\Documents and Settings\WindowsUSERNAME\Application Data\acccore
C:\Documents and Settings\WindowsUSERNAME\Application Data\Aim
You can Uninstall AIM at Add/Remove Programs in your Windows Control Panel. Please note that WindowsUSERNAME is your Windows Login name. You must manually type or navigate to this folder through “My Computer”. Afterwards reinstall AIM 6.5 and post your results below in the comments section.
We are still adding this problem unresolved list until enough people test out this workaround. No information is known on how to fix this problem currently. However the solution to the problem that occurred before October 2007 is as follows: If your My Documents Folder is on another hard drive on Windows Vista or Windows XP, Aim 6.1 and Aim 6.5 will show the error message: “Settings Error Before Sign in” Change your My Documents folder so that it is stored on your C:\ Drive. You should also Uncheck the option to remember your password at Sign On, and type your password manually.
Invite or Request Timed Out. Chatroom Not Working
We’ve been recently seeing users complain about this issue. Usually happens when you Invite people to chatrooms, “Invite or Request Timed Out” No information is available at this time. Stay Tuned!
Action Cancelled or Page Cannot Be Displayed for Aim Profiles

Connection Failed, Connection Lost messages
Some have suggested that by putting the correct date and Time in the lower right corner fixes this problem.
4194.13.4 Active Update Problems

Orbidden IM Messages Recieved
I’m currently investigating this, please disable Translator at Edit > Settings > Plugins and report back to me if this fixes the problem. If you get IMs that say “Orbidden” Read Here for More Info.
Invalid AIM Server Address
I’m also currently researching this problem. Check to see if your Firewall or Antivirus Program is blocking aim.exe from connecting. No none fixes has been found.
Direct Connect And Sending Pictures and Files Don’t Work
If Your Using Aim 6.1 you must upgrade to Aim 6.5 in order to direct connect. AOL blocked direct connect to protect their members from a security vulnerability.
Buddy Info Deletes when you Sign On
This has been fixed in Aim 6.5 Refresh Beta.
Aim 6 Freezes, Default Beep Sound, Windows Missing
This new AIM bug started affecting users, it is related to a Mcafee update.
Template.html AOL CONFIDENTIALITY shows up in IM window!
Users who have this problem should read this post. What basically happens is the IM window does not load the javascript files needed to run that application. It is recommended that you try to troubleshoot the problem yourself. If you found that by doing such and such it fixes the problem, please post a comment below. Connection Timed Out for November 2007
A mass bug is affecting many users of AIM that displays the message “Connection Timed Out”. Currently there is no fix, no news, and no update as to when it will stop. Click Here for more information
Aim 6.0 is Skinned Improperly
Aim 6.1, or 6.5 shows up as a grey skin using the OS theme as the title bar, and appears odd and broken. To fix this problem click Start > Programs > Accessibility > Accessibility Wizard, and make sure all accessibility options such as narrator, and magnifier, and whatever other properties that show up is unchecked, the font size can remain checked if you chose the smallest font on the first screen.
Mobile Users Don’t Show Up Online [Fixed]
This issue has been fixed.
Connection Timed Out
May Occur if Firewall/AntiVirus programs are blocking Aim6.exe from connecting. It can also occur if Router/Firewall does not support UPnP. We currently don’t have much information on how to fix this. please upgrade to Aim 6.5, and head to the Aim 6 Message boards to discuss the problem. We also would like if you can share your steps on how you fixed this problem to the public so we may add it to this list.
Windows Vista Aim 6 continuously gets stuck on Transferring
This affects both Windows Vista and XP, however no XP advice could be found. For Windows Vista, the transferring message was fixed for a user by running the following command in Windows Vista. First click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (run as administrator)
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
What we do know is that certain routers may affect Aim 6 from connecting to the servers. This fix may not work for all people, so its always suggested to troubleshoot the problem and share your comments at the Aim 6 Vista Message boards. Video Chat with Windows and Mac users
In order to Video chat with a Mac user, one must have Aim 6 initiate the video chat. The other user must have the latest version of iChat downloaded in order to work. For now, Windows users must always initiate the video chat FIRST or it will not work. Recently as of December 2007, users have lost the ability to video chat with iChat users and no current fix has been found.
My Expressions Page appears Blank when I Click Edit > Expressions
Disable any Ad-Blocking or Script Blocking programs in your Antivirus or Internet Browser. Any Adblocking extensions in Mozilla Firefox can disable the page from appearing.
My Buddy Info Freezes When I Edit It
Delete the AOL OCP Folder of your Screen Name. You will lose your profile, and your AIM settings, but you will not lose your buddy list, you can also save your buddy list if need be.
C:\Documents and Settings\**WINDOWSUSERNAME**\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL OCP\AIM\Storage\data
Within the data folder, you will see every screen name used to access AIM on your computer. Delete the folder of that screen name and your buddy info will get reset. You can also reset your buddy info by editing the common.cls file with a SQL Editor.
I see no buddy icon, no smileys
1. Reinstall Adobe Flash Player
2. Reinstall Viewpoint Media Player
3. Adblocking Software must be disabled in Anti-virus Firewall & Browser.
4. Install IE 7 or Uninstall IE 7 (optional)
5. AOL has switched servers to fix this issue.
My Screenname won’t Link or Unlink
This is an AOL HOST issue, which means AOL has to fix it. It started appearing recently that people weren’t able to link their screen names. One suggested that you should change your password for the screenname you wish to link and try again. Others suggested that you try linking your screennames in AOL Mail, where you click on the drop down next to your screen name and manage screen names. If you still have a problem you can always post on the Aim 6.0 Message Boards.
AIM Screenname is Suspended

My Text Size is too Small or HUGE in Aim 6.0, 6.1, 6.5
You must have Internet Explorer 6.0 to fix this. Click on a IM window, hold CTRL, and scroll the mouse wheel. This does not work if you have Internet Explorer 7.0.
A Server Error Occurred Workaround #1 [Internet Explorer]
Fixing this error isn’t always easy. At times it seems people get this for the most random of reasons. Tracking down the culprit isn’t alway an easy task. Its left to the programmers to introduce a different way of signing into Aim 6.0 to fix this problem. The current known suggestions so far is dealt through Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer must be able to visit websites, it should not be in “Work in Offline Mode.” Optional: Disable Anti-Virus protection to see if Aim 6 will connect.
A Server Error Occurred Workaround #2 [Behind a School/Work Network]
Click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings or connection settings. If your company/school requires a certain proxy to connect to aim, use this area to change the proxy settings here. Alternatively its best to use Aim Lite instead because it has proxy settings built in. Aim 6.5 has proxy settings, please download it if you are behind a proxy.
A Server Error Occurred Workaround #3 [Setting Correct Time]
Change the time of your computer to the correct date and time. This will ensure you do not get a server error occurred message. This affects both Windows XP and Vista.
A Server Error Occurred Workaround #4
This is the hardest error to fix, you may have set your firewall to allow Aim6.exe, Internet Explorer, and disabled Ad-blocking through your firewall, your not behind a company firewall, and your router/firewall has allowed all Aim 6.0 ports, yet you still receive this error message. Unfortunately there has been no workaround displayed against this bug. Aside from the Nero 6 installation case, this one has been tough to crack. If you currently have fixed this bug on your own, post a comment below. Make your voice be heard on the Aim 6.0 Message Boards. The more people willing to help find a solution for this particular problem the faster we can find a fix for it.
How Do I remove Aim Weeworld Weemee icons in Aim 6.5
1. Click on Edit > Expressions
2. Change both Your Buddy Icon and your Buddy Wallpaper
How do you unistall this? I have done everything and it is still there AIM6.0

Find Aol uninstaller and select Aim 6.0 to uninstall.
Hey I tried to make a weeworld character for my buddy icon and wallpaper and I cant see it as my wallpaper. I can see it in the small icon box however, the interactive wallpaper portion is just a floating face…… no body what so ever. It is just floating eyes and a mouth. What should I do because I have tried making several different weeworld people under two different names and different backgrounds and still always the same result. I also just installed AIM 6.0 when I tried to make the first character and even later installed the Gadgets Plug in.
The first thing you should do is actually test out in Weeworld.com if all the elements of the body loads in that website. You should register and test out if you can see your weemee and others. That problem sounds more like an issue with your flash version than a problem initiated by AIM.
How do I uninstall AIM 6.0
Rachel. Go To Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Select AOL uninstaller
how do you get your weemee onto your screen?
i have my own Screen name on my buddy list, but when im away the little notepad icon wont show up next to my sn. and sometimes when im NOT away, my notepad icon WILL show up. for other users, my sn shows the notepad properly, but for me, my own sn is all confused.
Bishop: When you save your Wee Mee you will see it as a buddy icon, but it won’t show up in the screen until you press the paintbrush, and click show my expression
Diane: I’m not sure if I can trace this problem, please check if you are signed into multiple locations.
my font sizes are all 1scale lower - meaning size 36 looks like size 24 and size 24 looks like size 18 etc…
this suddenly happened, and i dont know how to fix it
its not just my font, but everyone’s fonts i see - my entire conversation window is smaller (the window itself is the same size, but the text, etc. is smaller) - i tried uninstalling and installing (full uninstall - including preferences/screennames) and the problem wasnt solved
this also applies to looking at other people’s AIM profiles - everything is a scale smaller
also - i found a folder that is labelled ’storage’ and it includes all the screennames ever used on my AIM (before it was fully uninstalled)
is this the folder that has the info/passwords etc. saved?
if it is, where do i place it to replace the missing pws and screennames?

1. Press CTRL + MOUSE WHEEL to change the font sizes
2. I haven’t found where passwords are stored yet, they might be there or in registry, plus it would be encrypted anyway.

Yes you do that in your conversation window but it won’t work if you have IE7 installed
In regards to the problem many users are having lately with signing on to AIM 6.0 “A Server Error Has Occurred”
The fix that finally worked for me was simply setting my calender to the correct time and date (I think the date is the key). Hopefully this answer finds it’s way into the hands of those in need, and works to solve the issue.

hmm, i checked to see if i was signed on in other locations, but thats not the problem. it happens to all the screennames on my computers, and all the computers in my house. i dont know if this is happening to anyone else.
i think i should also add that whenever i edit my profile, and save it, THEN the proper icon comes up. like, if im away, the icon wont come up, but i can go to editing my profile and click save (without no edits, even) and thenn the icon will come up. and the same thing when im NOT away.
its really strange.
surprisingly, neither fix 1 or 2 worked for me… so i had to downgrade to aim 5.9… however I FOUND A WAY TO FIX IT!!! well, at least it worked for me. I know this sounds dumb, but i tried everything else, and the one thing that worked was making sure the clock on my computer was set to the right time, no joke. It worked for me.

I am starting to get really mad at my AIM 6.0. I will download an icon and it will say downloaded and then the window will pop up telling me to save, apply or cancel the downloading of my chosen icon. The catch: my icon will not show up. I did not have a problem with this till I made a new AIM screen name. Please help! I’m going bonkers!
Why don’t you right click and save the icon instead of just clicking it.
Then Click Edit > Settings > Buddy List > Expressions > Browse . Select the icon you saved and your done.

I created a weemee for my aim and it shows up fine in the weemee website and in my buddy icon but when my weemee comes up as wallpaper it always has green eyes when it should have brown! I have remade my weemee over and over again and reset my wallpaper and everything. The eyes wont change. Other people have brown eyed weemees though, what might be my problem?

i’m having the same problem as leia22, my weemee is supposed to have brown eyes, but they become green when i display it full-size.
i just wanted to know a way so that you can sign onto aim from a different location and that message saying you are signed on from 2 different locations wont come up.

If you have Internet Explorer 6, Click the IM window and press CTRL+MOUSESCROLLWHEEL
Also verifying the solution to “a server error occurred” of fixing your Date/Time. Like mentioned earlier, the date is the key. I just had to change the date from June 12, 2005 to April 11, 2007 and suddenly it worked haha.

I created a weemee and saved it, but how do I get it as my AIM wallpaper? I go to expressions and it’s not there.
When you save your weemee its automatically becomes your wallpaper but you won’t see your own weemee since your IMing someone else. If you want to see your own just click the Paint Brush Tool in the IM window for Aim 6.1
My friends say that they can’t see my weemee. I know it’s saved b/c when I go back to the site, it’s there, but it won’t show up as my wallpaper on my friend’s im window. Do they need triton to see it or can they see it with trillium?

They can not see it with trillian, they need aim 6.0 or aim 6.1 to see it otherwise they’ll just see an icon of your weemee.
I install AIM 6.0, but then none of my drop down menus work. I mean NONE of them, not my away message menu, not my file menu, nothing. It worked for a long time before randomly they stopped working. I’ve re-installed it dozens of times and it never works. Any suggestions?

When you create weemee’s use Firefox instead and see if it works. Your icon in Aim 6.0 if you added yourself to your own buddy list, should show a little face of the person you made. If you see that then it works. You won’t normally see your own weemee but you will see your friends’

I just fixed this problem. On my computer, I got this message because I had my internet explorer settings set to connect to a proxy server. I just unchecked that box, but AOL tells you how to address this issue here: http://beta.aol.com/projects.php?project=aim6&loc=10#proxy

To speak to the “Settings error before Sign In” post above, I am also experiencing the same problem. In my case, this is definitely not a proxy issue. I have read that it may be due to mappping Vista’s Documents folder to a different hard drive/partition other than C:. I’ve been told by beta testers that there is a patch for this problem, but I’ve never received a response! Any help here would be most appreciated!
Yes apparently there is a patch but Beta Staff have not realeased it to the public. You’ll have to ask one of them to give it to you from the beta message boards.

I found how to shrink the font size int he IM box to a friend. (Mine used to be GIANT and theres nothing in settings to change it. Hold down CTRL+ALt and scroll down on your mouse scroll wheel. (or up if you need it bigger)

Every time I try to increase my font size in AIM 6.0, it defaults back to 12 point. Does anybody know how to fix this?

I created my WeeMee and it worked fine for awhile, and recently I can’t see any of my friend’s weemees. There is this huge gap in the text box where their weemee should be. They can all see mine, but I can’t see theirs and I used to be able to… help!?!?!!?

I recently got AIM 6.0 and for some reason the people on my buddy list who have away messages up don’t even appear on my buddy list. I tried to add them and it says they are already added, but they do not show up offline either. Do you have any idea how to fix this? Thank you!

Hi, I was a paying member of AOL for 9 years, then switched to the Free AIM Mail last year. I just got my AIM suspended today, and I would like to find out why and reactivate it, because I have A LOT of important info and email on it. Like you said, AOL only offers customer support for paying members, but that’s not good for me because I need my account back ASAP!!!! Who do I contact? AIM Help is useless in this regard. Do I call corporate? Is there someone I could email at AIM?

JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!! I solved the problem of reactivating my FREE AOL account!!!!! What you need to do is to call (800) 827-3338, and chosse the option that you want to sign on up to PAY for AOL. When you do that, you get connected to a LIVE customer support. Tell them that you’re willing to pay to get your account turned back on, and they will take a look into your account and tell you why you’re suspended, and reactivate you. They gave me a direct number if this were to happen again: 888-758-0297
BTW, I forgot to add, that all this was done for FREE and I am still not a paying customer.
OK, Well I’ll post about it. Why did you get suspended in the first place?
For bulk mail. I went into my address book and pulled all the addresses out of it to send info about an event I was doing. Now, I didn’t know the policy that the MAX amount of people I could post was 50 per email, because in all my 10 years of using AOL, this has never happened to me before (although my password had been stolen several times when I was a paying member and culprit would use my account to post SPAM which would have my account suspended, but I was able to reinstate my account with no problem.) The customer rep. told me to divide my address book into groups of 50, and then it wouldn’t be a problem. To think though, that AOL should AT LEAST make it easier to find info about reactivating your account. If you’re not paying, they treat you like CRAP. When I was running around trying to get my account turned back on, I called the legal department to see if they could help, but the lady I spoke to was indifferent, nonchalant, and kind of rude. The beta.aim.com were of no help either. You’re suggestion turned on a light bulb. The only way I seemed to make a breakthrough was when it involved some type of cash.
I cant see the My expressions page, it loads, but wont show smileys or wallpapers or anything. I disabled my adblocker in Firefox and anything else that would still block it. And nothing. Any advice??

You have the Aim Music Link or BuddyTunes Plugin. You can Uninstall it in Add/Remove, or Disable it at Edit > Settings > Plugins

Since you use Firefox, have you tried the expressions page in IE and is it still being blocked?
hey, i think i have found the workaround #4 for the connection problem with aim connection problems along with the help of WBMike!!!!
1.download aim beta 6.2 from aim.com
2.install it and get it to the connection screen.
3.uninstall your firewall/antivirus/internetsecurity software, such as norton, mcafee, spysweeper, etc.
4.sign on to aim”should work now”
5.reinstall your firewall/antivirus/etc.
6. it should make it so that there is a default acceptance for the aim connection.
test this and see if it is a universal cure, please comment back and let us both know how it goes.

The Weemee bug with green eyes has to be fixed by weeworld.com, all you could possibly do to fix this is start over even though sometimes it might not work.
I’m having a lot of trouble with getting the error message “a server error has occured.”
Nothing works, and I’ve installed and uninstalled AIM 6.1 over and over again. And I’ve already checked my time and date, and they’re both correct. AIM has always worked with my Spam/Pop-up blocker before, so I don’t know what’s happening.

Disable your Firewall and sign on to Aim.
And
Disable your anti-virus and sign on to aim.
IF you can log onto Aim with both of those disabled, it means your firewall or antivirus program is blocking aim.

yes, even in IE it is being blocked, but i also have another problem my notifications, instead of showing up on top of each other, they re blocking one another, i keep moving them manually, but it doesnt fix it
I just got a new laptop with windows vista and I am trying to install the newest version aim. I’ve tried numerous times from many different websites and even turned off my firewall. However, I keep having the same problem. It will install but then when I try to log on it will say “Transferring…” for a while and then just stop responding. Any ideas?
I’m back with a new problem. My AIM 6.0 isn’t working, but atleast “A Server Error Has Occured” isn’t back. Now I’m dealing with the message ” Connection Timed-Out”

As for Nichole, with Windows Vista, The Transferring error seems to be affecting some people behind routers. I have updated some information about it in this post at the bottom.
Im forced to unitstall AIM 6.1 because after I installed it it suddenly a message appears and says that a “Unkown Error has occured”. Then it restarts most of my programs. AIM still works, ironically, but nothing else does. People say that AIM has installed a firewall that causes all of my other programs to stop working. Is this true? HELP ME!!!
I try to log on, but when I do, just like WBMike, it gets stuck on transferring and stops. Then it goes back to the sign on screen and says a connect error occured. I have no idea what’s going on because everything else is working fine concerning the internet.

Well if you read in the post I asked to disable the Translator plugin. Did you install the translator plugin, and do you have it disabled and still get orbidden messages?

My Vista computer is protected by Mcafee. Just about a week or so ago, I began having problems with AIM mail. My high speed internet service is through Quest and logging on to AIM is fast, however when I attempt to write or answer an email the process of sending and or writing freezes up, often for up to ten minutes. Also, my email to Yahoo Groups is full of mysterious question marks (littered throughout my posts). Changing the font as someone suggested failed to correct this gremlin attack. Any assistance sure would be appreciated as AIM Help section fails to “fix” or repair either of these problems.
Installation of AOL Update (Update Numbers 4194.13.4) fails when I try to install on my Vista laptop. I have AOL 9.0vr and AIM 6.5 installed
Turning off the Windows firewall fixed the (Update Numbers 4194.13.4) problem
For Cheryl, It sounds more like your web browser is having problems displaying AIM Mail. Usually in this situation you can try an alternative AIM Mail system like :
http://classic.webmail.aol.com
http://basic.webmail.aol.com
These two versions do not have the extra fancy javascript that makes your AIM Mail Freeze.

so, just to clarify, is that update 4194.13.4 safe? because i’ve had that same little window come up before with a different message and it really effed up my computer.
4194.13.4 is safe unless your using Windows Vista, which then you’ll need to turn UAC on before you install it.
