Aim Express: Stack Overflow Error at line 0

I’ve been receiving a couple of complaints that Aim Express displays the error message, “Stack Overflow Error at line 0″ everytime you attempt to send and recieve a message. This error often times makes Aim Express unsuable. It is likely caused by a Javascript glitch, where IE displays a message that there is a script is slowing down your computer. I’ll update this entry everytime a solution is found. If you have any solutions you found even if its temporary, post a comment below and I’ll add it to the aim wiki. This is an AOL HOST issue, which means AOL must fix it, there is nothing wrong with your computer.

Update 02.01.2007| AOL has fixed this issue.

Update on Possible Fixes

- Use Mozilla Firefox to access Aim Express
- Disable Buddy Icons in Edit > Settings > Buddy List
- Use an alternate program such as Meebo, E-buddy, AimforPSP

Although this issue has been fixed, some users still see this error message. Commenter: J Szarmach, suggests clearing your temporary internet files and cache. Scroll down for more information.

I agree! I have been receiving that same error message when sending and receiving IM’s. I googled the problem was told to go to tools, internet options, advanced, and check the box to disable the debugging script and uncheck the box about receiving a notification everytime a error message is sent. Still Nothing!!! Help!!! Work is soooo boring and I can’t download. I will go crazy!

  2. none of your suggested fixes works. I’m extremely interested in a fix for this. It occurs in multiple sites for me… at the college where I teach, and also at a customer site with no firewall at all.

    feel free to email me.

Check out the new embedded version of Kool IM.

  4. Out of the given options, utilizing Mozilla resolved the issue for me.

  5. A co-worker and I have been having the same problem. It is the only IM we are able to sneak through. Though occasionally a totally new version will show up and work but then it’s like they take that one down and put up the old crappy one again. I think this is something on AIM’s side and (not liking it) have to wait for them to fix it.

I know no one else who uses AIM Express, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this problem discussed here!

This “stack overflow” phenomenon had, for me, one additional characteristic that hasn’t yet been mentioned here: upon my opening of AIM Express, the little error window with the “stack overflow” message would appear many, many times — sometimes up to 20. I’d have to close every error window in order to proceed. And then, as discussed here, a new “stack overflow” error message would pop up every time I tried to type a comment. It even came when a buddy was initiating a conversation with me; and this sometimes caused the buddy’s first message to me to be lost.

The problem has actually disappeared for me as of this week (since Mon. Jan 22); but it plagued me for weeks. Before this week, the only way I got around the “stack overflow” problem was to use the U.K. version of AIM Express at aimexpress.aol.co.uk . The error occurred only rarely with that version, as opposed to constantly with the U.S. version

I forgot to add that the only drawback I found of using the U.K. version of AIM Express is that I wasn’t able to send IMs to people on their U.S.-based cell phones.

  8. Thanks for All The Comments. This issue seems to have been fixed.

The error is a result of a corrupt, missing or incomplete files in the browser cache. To fix this error, clear IE’s “Temporary Internet Files” (in IE7 go to Tools, Internet Options, Browsing History, Delete… etc.). Once the temporary files are gone, AIM should start without this error. –Joe
